The Civil Society Democratic Governance Facility (Amkeni Wakenya) is inviting interested and eligible non-state actors including NGOs, FBOs, Academic Institutions, CBOs to submit proposals for the award of grants in a programme entitled “Strengthening Civic Space for Realization of Sustainable Development Goals-SDGs in Kenya”.
Focus of Interventions
The project is to be implemented in 6 counties of Kilifi, Kwale, Turkana, Kitui, Wajir & Garissa with a focus on interventions relating to:
- Policy and legal advocacy.
- Civil society self-regulation.
- Digital space protection.
- Public participation.
- Support to marginalised groups.
- Engagement of CSOs with county governments on planning, budgeting and project/programme social audit.
Amkeni Wakenya is a flagship project of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) established in 2008 to provide coordinated technical and financial support to non-state actors working on democratic governance in Kenya.
The funding under this project is aimed at promoting an enabling civic space and therefore strengthening the ability of CSOs in holding governments and the private sector accountable for the realization of SDGs.
Funding Information
- The indicative overall total allocation available for this Call is USD 1,620,000.
- The project grant duration will vary from one year to three years depending on the category of the grant.
Outcomes
- Improved enabling environment for civil society (Regulation of civic space aligned with the Constitution of Kenya 2010).
- Policy and legal advocacy: One grant will be issued to a county-focused CSO for 3 years involved in policy and legal advocacy on CSO law.
- Civil society self-regulation: Grants to CSO self-regulatory forums at county level for 4 years in the 4 counties; One grant will be issued to a county-focused CSO as an Emerging Issues Fund (EIF to one CSO in one county alternately per year for the 4 years) to support the coordination of self-regulatory forums in the 4 counties.
- Digital space protection: One grant will be issued to a national level CSO with a focus on all four counties for 3 years involved in the protection of digital space.
- Civic society voice in policy making strengthened at national and county levels (Inclusive platforms for public participation and civic engagement strengthened at County and national levels)
- Public participation: Four grants will be issued to county-level CSOs involved in advocacy towards the implementation of public participation frameworks. These grants will run for three (3) years. A CSO in each of the four target counties will receive a grant throughout this support.
- Support to marginalized groups: Four grants will be issued to county-level CSOs involved in empowering marginalized and vulnerable groups to engage and hold accountable duty bearers. These grants will run for three (3) years. A CSO in each of the four target counties will receive a grant throughout this support.
- Support to CSOs to engage county governments on planning, budgeting and programme/project social audit. Three grants will be issues to CSOs in Turkana, Kilifi, Garissa and Wajir.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for a grant, applicants must:
- Be a non-profit-making Civil Society Organization (CSO) registered under the relevant Laws of Kenya for not less than two (2) years
- Have a physical presence in the county applied for in the case of county-based CSOs.
- Be directly responsible for the preparation and management of the project, not acting as an intermediary (no sub-granting).
- Demonstrate prior experience of at least two years or more, carrying out activities in the field of development of the kind covered under this programme;
- Demonstrate a good sustainability potential
- Have a bank account.
- Must submit audited financial statements for the past 2 years
- Must submit at least one Letter of Endorsement from a grant organization other than Amkeni Wakenya.
