The Active Travel Innovation Fund is a £1 million initiative designed to encourage creative and evidence-based approaches that make walking, wheeling, and cycling safer and more accessible across England.
With grants of up to £100,000 available, the fund invites organisations to test or scale new ideas that promote active travel and help build healthier, low-carbon communities. Over a 12-month delivery period followed by an evaluation phase, successful applicants will implement measurable interventions and demonstrate clear impact through robust monitoring and reporting.
The Fund aims to support applicants whose work aligns with Active Travel England’s (ATE) mission of enabling more people to be active by improving access to safer walking, wheeling, and cycling opportunities. It encourages applicants to identify and address specific needs, gaps, or opportunities in the sector through innovative solutions developed in partnership with local stakeholders. Through this platform, organisations can expand their reach, strengthen their interventions, and contribute directly to ATE’s long-term vision of transforming travel habits and creating safer, more inclusive public spaces.
In particular, the Fund prioritises projects that focus on underrepresented groups in active travel, including women and girls, ethnic minority communities, children, people with disabilities, and those who are less physically active. It also aligns with the UK Government’s broader Health and Growth Missions—supporting efforts to reduce pressure on the NHS, enhance community safety, stimulate economic growth, and progress toward national net-zero goals. By funding these innovative projects, the Active Travel Innovation Fund seeks to inspire a cultural shift toward active, sustainable, and equitable mobility for everyone.
