Deadline: 05-Sep-2025
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees is seeking grant applications for protection and solution of refugees and asylum seekers in Tanzania – Gender-Based Violence.
In Tanzania’s Kigoma Region, a new collaborative effort is emerging to strengthen protection for some of the most vulnerable communities. Rooted in a deep concern for safety and human dignity, this initiative focuses on addressing gender-based violence through a networked response involving government bodies, community actors, and humanitarian partners.
At its heart, the program seeks to safeguard survivors and prevent future harm by delivering survivor-centered care. Individuals affected by violence—women, men, girls, and boys—will have access to confidential case management, psychosocial support, legal referrals, and connections to broader health or social services. Each person’s healing journey will be guided with sensitivity and respect.
Recognizing that prevention is just as vital as response, the project includes deliberate work to establish and sustain safe spaces by engaging communities directly. By collaborating with local leaders and residents, and working across different sectors, teams will identify vulnerabilities and strengthen protections so that women, men, and children can feel secure in their surroundings.
Equally important is transforming attitudes that allow violence to persist. Through community-based protection work, participants will take part in awareness sessions on trusting reporting mechanisms and Protection from Sexual Exploitation and Abuse. Important frontline actors—like humanitarian staff and community leaders—will receive training to refine their ability to prevent, mitigate, and respond to violence in line with broader protection frameworks.
Building empowerment lies at the core of these efforts. Women and adolescent girls will be invited to participate in life skills and empowerment sessions tailored to foster resilience, independence, and confidence. Throughout, responsive strategies—designed to encourage behavioral shifts—will promote healing and help reshape harmful social norms.
This initiative is not just about responding to individual needs; it intends to weave protection into the fabric of communities. By bridging community-based approaches with multisectoral coordination, the program lays the groundwork for lasting change—one that upholds dignity, restores safety, and nurtures hope in the Kigoma region.
