Deadline: 30-Jun-21
The SAEAS Abaraka Awards are underwritten by collectors Aissatou Sidime-Blanton and Stewart Blanton in collaboration with the San Antonio Ethnic Art Society (SAEAS).
Purpose
- To support artistic projects that contribute to the continuance of the career of female artists and arts professionals.
- To promote art interests among female youth under the age of 21.
Categories
- Artist Grants: They seek to assist visual artists who demonstrate a commitment to their craft and artistic communities. The funding is intended to further the recipients’ artistic practices and encourage career longevity. Each artist grant is awarded to fund production of a multi-piece visual art project that will be exhibited when the artist may be at a critical stage in her career and where this funding would have the most impact.
- Exhibition Assistance: SAEAS Abaraka Award provides early- to mid-career visual artists nationally with cash funding to help defray the costs of mounting an exhibition.
- For Arts Professionals: This often overlooked segment of the field is indispensable in helping document artists’ intentions and to expand the visual arts canon; in preserving and restoring artwork as it weathers light, heat, dust and other environmental exposures; and in educating the public about the role of art in building well-rounded individuals and communities. The third type of Abaraka Award is designed to assist early- to mid-career arts professionals in completion of:
- Written research projects that document the roles and impact of African American women in the visual arts in the U.S.; or
- Academic Requirements for admission into curatorial and art conservation graduate studies programs.
Award Information
- The Abaraka Awards will be given to African-American Women in the Visual Arts as a one-time grant equal up to $3,000 to support the completion of an arts-related project in the calendar year in which the funds are committed.
- The grant is given bi-annually and cannot be repeated.
