Deadline: 28-Aug-2025
Entries are now open for the Joke Waller-Hunter (JWH) Initiative, which aims to create opportunities for young individuals in developing countries to reach their full potential in the environmental sector.
The grants cannot be used for implementing or developing projects, nor can they be used to pay indirect costs, administration fees, or the salaries of anyone other than the grantee.
The initiative offers small grants ranging from €1,500 to €7,000, tailored to each grantee’s leadership development plan.
Ideal candidates are those who show strong potential and ambition to become leaders in their environmental field. They should be connected to local communities, community-based organizations, or civil society organizations and committed to sustainable development, gender equality, and climate justice. Creativity and innovation are also key traits.
The initiative targets young people affiliated with environmental CSOs in developing countries and emerging economies. While the definition of “young” may vary, preference is given to applicants under the age of 35. Individuals from advanced economies are not eligible.
Applicants from the following countries cannot participate: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, United Kingdom, and United States.
Nominations are preferably submitted in English, but Spanish, French, and Portuguese are also accepted. All sections of the form must be filled out properly; incomplete forms may be considered invalid.
Each nomination must include a completed form with two references, the candidate’s CV, and a recent digital photo. Only successful candidates will be informed, which may take up to six weeks after the nomination deadline. The decisions made by the JWH Initiative are final and cannot be appealed.
