Nominations are now open for the Prime Minister’s Pacific Youth Awards to encourage any Pacific young person creating a positive impact in their chosen field between the age of 17 and 24 to apply.
Since the launch of PMPYA in 2010, the awards have helped to enhance the journey for extraordinary individuals who have progressed into careers ranging from engineers and scientists to chief executives, lawyers, international artists, and academics to name a few.
Award Categories
- Language, Culture & Identity Award (sponsored by Ministry for Pacific Peoples)
- This award recognises a young person who has demonstrated outstanding leadership qualities by leading a project in their community, church or school or has acted in a way that has inspired others through their language and culture to make a positive change in their own life or the lives of others. The winner of this category will receive a paid internship with the Ministry for Pacific Peoples valued at $10,000.
- Commercial & Corporate Award (sponsored by Deloitte)
- This award recognises a young person who has shown significant academic achievement or business activity in the fields of commerce, accounting, marketing and/or international business. The winner of this category will receive a paid internship in Wellington with Deloitte, valued at $10,000.
- Teach NZ Award (sponsored by Ministry of Education)
- This award recognises a young Pacific person who is passionate about teaching and has Pacific language skills and cultural competencies. The winner of this category will receive an allowance valued at $10,000 during the 2021 or 2022 academic year towards the cost of course fees.
- Business and Entrepreneurship Award (sponsored by Pacific Business Trust)
- This award recognises a young person who has demonstrated entrepreneurial qualities through involvement in a business or social enterprise activity. The winner of this category will receive a business grant valued at $10,000
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for PMPYA, applicants must:
- Be 17-24 years of age at the time of submitting their application.
- Be of Pacific descent.
- Be a citizen or permanent resident of New Zealand.
- Have created a positive impact in their chosen field in the last 12-24 months.
- Demonstrate that they are involved in the Pacific community.
- Be able to provide character references from two independent referees of appropriate standing (e.g., a minister, school teacher, youth worker, community leader, employer etc). Referees must not be related to you e.g. a cousin, parent etc.
