The U.S. Consulate General Naha of the U.S. Department of State announces an open competition for organizations to submit applications to carry out a program for the Okinawa Youth Council.
The recipient organization will recruit, screen the participants (college and university students), and will design four-week program comprised of three weekly virtual webinars and a three-day in-person workshop in summer 2024 in Okinawa Prefecture.
Program Objectives
The objectives of this program are:
- Learn about the U.S.-Japan Alliance’s growing importance and its role in deterring future conflicts in the Indo-Pacific region,
- Have an increased understanding of the U.S. military presence and its role regional security, and
- Change neutral or negative perceptions towards to U.S. foreign policy.
Program Details
- The online programs will comprise of lectures and discussions with experts on U.S.-Japan Alliance, U.S. military base-hosting municipalities, and leaders of U.S. base hosting communities in mainland Japan.
- The in-person program will include briefings, workshops, and student exchanges on key U.S. military installations in Okinawa and briefings from U.S. Consulate General Naha/U.S. Mission Japan leadership.
- The applicant is expected to use grant funds if staff members are traveling to a workshop in Okinawa. Also, the students should not be charged any fees for participation.
- The program can be host in English, but the recipient organization need to provide an interpretation in Japanese.
Funding Information
- Awards may range from a minimum of $5,000 to a maximum of $10,000.
Duration
- Length of performance period: Within 6 months.

- Approximately 20 to 30 college and university students residing in Okinawa.

- Not-for-profit organizations, including think tanks and civil society/non-governmental organizations;
- Public and private educational institutions;
- Individuals;
- Public International Organizations and Governmental institutions.

- To be eligible to receive an award, all organizations must have a Unique Entity Identifier (UEI).
- Applicants are only allowed to submit one proposal per organization. If more than one proposal is submitted from an organization, all proposals from that institution will be considered ineligible for funding.
