The UniKorea Foundation announces an open competition for organizations interested in projects that create a global network for promoting reunification and peace on the Korean Peninsula.
The UniKorea Foundation (UniKorea) based in Seoul, Republic of Korea, is an NGO devoted to the task of preparing for peaceful unification between North and South Korea. Every year, UniKorea awards grant funds to several creative projects that promote peace and unification on the Korean Peninsula.
Categories
- The UniKorea Grant supports the following projects:
- Inter-Korean exchange and cooperation & Social Development in North Korea
- Inter-Korean Exchange & Cooperation
- Projects that aim to develop DPRK’s social and economic infrastructure and to find methods to enhance inter-Korean exchange and cooperation.
- Examples: Construction of school buildings in the rural area of DPRK, Inter-Korean business in the Gaeseong Industrial Complex, etc.
- Humanitarian & Sustainable Development
- Projects for North Korea Projects that aim to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) in the DPRK while effectively improving the North Korean people’s standard of living and quality of life.
- Examples: Health care projects supplying medicines to DPRK clinics and hospitals, environmental projects tackling pollution and climate change in DPRK, Social projects improving the welfare of disabled North Korean people, etc.
- HRD Training & Capacity Building
- Projects for North Koreans Training courses, field trips, and capacity-building projects that help North Koreans to realize their full potential to enhance the ability of the North Korean people and/or promote peace and unification on the Korean Peninsula.
- Examples: Local or overseas projects for North Koreans in various sectors such as health/medical, environment, agriculture/fishery, education, economy, business, urban development, renewable energy, etc.
- Inter-Korean Exchange & Cooperation
- Creating a Global Network for Korean Reunification
- HRD Training & Capacity Building
- Projects for global students and professionals Training courses, field trips, and capacity-building projects that help South Koreans, and/or nationals from other countries raise awareness about North Korea and its people and/or promote peace and unification on the Korean Peninsula.
- Examples: A faculty-led Study Abroad in South Korea for non-Korean students and young scholars to provide hands-on experiences, a field study program for Korean students and early-career researchers to broaden knowledge about Korean reunification, visiting international organizations and universities, etc.
- Original Research
- Original research about DPRK or Korean Reunification issues.
- Examples: Market research on North Korean consumers’ brand preference, the applicability of Fintech (financial technology) business in DPRK, etc.
- Creative Contents
- Creative projects that do not belong to the above Categories. The contents or events should produce and promote quality articles, videos, podcasts, conferences, seminars, and exhibitions to name a few about North Korea and Korean Reunification issues. Also, they should be able to generate specific, measurable, and tangible social outputs or outcomes that are expected to contribute to the cause of Korean Reunification.

Funding Information
- 10,000 USD – 100,000 USD.
Project Period
- November 15, 2023 – June 30, 2024.
- All grantees can run projects for 7.5 months at the longest.
Eligibility Criteria
- Organizations, universities, research institutes, think tanks, agencies, NGOs, etc. outside of South Korea.
- Universities, organizations, research institutes, think tanks, institutions, NGOs, etc. in Korea that have an official partnership (such as an MOU) with a leading overseas university, institute, or organization.
- The applicants with Korean Diaspora projects implemented mainly in South Korea should apply to the domestic UniKorea Grant Program.
Ineligibility Criteria
- Grants will not be funded for any project:
- that involves political, religious, or for-profit activities
- that is irrelevant to North Korean or Korean unification issues
- that breaches international sanctions including UN sanctions
- that cannot abide by the “Grant Administration Manual” including submitting a project specific audit report after the end of the project
