The Botswana Network on Ethics, Law and HIV/AIDS (BONELA) is seeking applications to promote a human rights approach to HIV/AIDS, TB, and broader health issues in Botswana through awareness raising, capacity building, advocacy, strategic litigation, onward granting, service delivery, linkage to care, and assembling of a critical mass of human rights defenders.
BONELA’s vision is, ‘Making the right to health a reality in Botswana’, and their mission is, ‘To ensure protection, promotion and fulfilment of the right to health in Botswana’.
The organisation has implemented varying projects across all 27 health districts in Botswana, and since inception, part of BONELA’s unique contribution has been a focus on the human right, health, and capacity building of vulnerable and marginalised communities. BONELA’s work is guided by community needs as identified through community engagements and community led monitoring of human rights to promote the alignment of the Botswana human rights landscape to national, regional, and international instruments.
Funding Information
- BONELA intends to award up to five (5) SSRs under the Removing Human Rights Related Barriers module and up to two (2) SSRs under the Community TB Care and Prevention module.
- The performance period is up to December 2024.
Scope of Work
- The modules funded and approved for implementation are shown below. Organizations can apply for more than one module. Applicants must submit a separate proposal for each module if applying for more than one.
- Removing Human Rights Related Barriers
- Objective:
- To increase the capacity to deliver community TB/HIV/RNMCH services that will increase access and coverage leading to the required national impact.
- Target Population:
- People Living with HIV (PLHIV)
- People Living with Disabilities (PLWD)
- Adolescent Gils and Young Women (AGYW)
- Female Sex Workers (FSW)
- Men who have Sex with other Men (MSM)
- TB Key Populations.
- A single award will be issued for each target population. Applicants may apply to cater for target populations not listed above, however, must provide a justification rationale.
- Level One Indicators:
- HIV O-13 Proportion of ever-married or partnered women aged 15-49 who experienced physical or sexual violence from a male intimate partner in the past 12 months.
- HIV O-17 Percentage of people living with HIV reporting their rights were violated who sought legal redress.
- HIV O-16a Percentage of men who have sex with men who avoid health care because of stigma and discrimination.
- Level Two Indicators:
- Number of IEC materials produced (segregated by type).
- Number of IEC materials distributed.
- Number of stakeholder engagements and number of stakeholders engaged on emerging rights issues.
- Number of REActors/Community Led Monitors trained
- Illustrative Activities:
- Production of information, education, and communication materials to raise awareness.
- Community conversations on rights, mental health, SRH, cultural and gender norms, violence, and stigma and discrimination.
- District-level stakeholder engagements on emerging rights issues.
- Recruitment, training, and support for project staffing
- Ongoing support and supervision for field teams.’
- Site visits and data verification for quality assessment
- Objective:
- Community TB Care and Prevention
- Objective:
- To contribute to the reduction of TB morbidity and mortality.
- Target Population:
- TB Key Populations.
- Level One Indicators:
- TB O-5⁽ᴹ⁾ TB treatment coverage: Percentage of new and relapse cases that were notified and treated among the estimated number of incident TB cases in the same year (all form of TB – bacteriologically confirmed plus clinically diagnosed).
- TB O-2a Treatment success rate of all forms of TB – bacteriologically confirmed plus clinically diagnosed, new and relapse cases.
- TCP-8 Percentage of new and relapse TB patients tested using WHO recommended rapid tests at the time of diagnosis.
- TCP-2⁽ᴹ⁾ Treatment success rate- all forms: Percentage of TB cases, all forms, bacteriologically confirmed plus clinically diagnosed, successfully treated (cured plus treatment completed) among all TB cases registered for treatment during a specified period, new and relapse cases.
- Level Two Indicators:
- Number of stakeholders reached.
- Number of Volunteer Community Health Workers trained.
- Number of mobile populations reached.
- Number of people reached.
- Number of campaigns conducted.
- Illustrative Activities:
- Collaborative meetings to upscale TB/HIV/RMNCH services, governance, and accountability.
- Recruitment, training, and support for project staffing.
- Active TB case finding through CHW support and linkage to TB treatment.
- TB mobilisation and awareness activities through community health workers.
- Documentation and linkage of rights violations
- Conduct targeted biannual mobilization & sensitization campaigns to increase community awareness for TB & HIV for prevention & control purposes (education, screening – TB, HIV &other tests, distribution of IEC pamphlets booklets etc).
