Deadline: 20 December 2017
The John Ellerman Foundation is seeking applications for its grant program with an aim to advance the wellbeing of people, society and the natural world.
The foundation likes to support smaller organisations whose work has reach and significance across the UK. In order for their funds to have as wide an impact as possible they look for charities that have a national footprint.
Funding Categories
- Arts: The foundation believes that art has the potential to enrich and transform lives. They support arts organisations that represent excellence in their field at a national level.
- Environment: Their aim is to contribute to greater harmony between people and the planet. They fund in two areas:
- managing habitats
- protecting the seas.
- They will also consider applications for work in the UK Overseas Territories.
- Welfare: This category is for people facing poverty, hardship and other forms of disadvantage. It aims to help them lead fuller, more independent lives. They fund in two areas:
- realising individual potential
- strengthening personal and social networks.
Eligibility Criteria
- The foundation funds organisations from any part of the UK whose work has impact across the whole of the UK. They also fund those working across England.
- The foundation sometimes consider requests for work in another UK country where the proposal is a very strong match with their priorities and is likely to be relevant to other parts of the UK.
- Their Environment category provides for a small number of grants for work in UK Overseas Territories, and exceptionally for marine projects outside UK waters. They only consider applications from UK-based NGOs.
- Applicant must:
- Be doing work that has a national footprint. They interpret this flexibly. Because they want their funds to have significant reach and impact, they consider both where applicants are working and what they are doing. Occasionally the foundation funds organisations that work locally, for example if a programme has good potential for replication or being rolled out on a larger scale.
- Have an income between £100,000 and £10 million. If applicant’s income is greater than this the foundation will only consider a grant if applicants are uniquely placed to help meet their funding objectives. They call this the ‘only they can do it’ test.
