Deadline: 28 September 2018
Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada is currently seeking academic research proposals relevant to Canada’s business risk management policy objectives in the agriculture sector.
The AgriRisk Initiatives (ARI) program supports the development of new risk management tools for use in the agriculture sector. ARI is a Canadian Agricultural Partnership Business Risk Management (BRM) initiative. It includes two funding streams: ARI Research and Development (ARI R&D), and ARI Administration Capacity Building. Microgrants fall under the R&D stream of ARI.
Objectives
The objectives of ARI R&D funding are to:
- Support agricultural and agri-business stakeholder groups to develop new and innovative risk management tools to fill identified risk exposures; and,
- Increase participation of the private sector in providing risk management tools (products and services) to the Canadian agricultural sector.
Funding Information
In order to fulfill these objectives, the ARI will offer Microgrants of up to $25,000 per year (to a maximum of three years) for academic research proposals that can inform development of alternative risk management tools.
Eligibility Criteria
- The following criteria must be met:
- The recipient must be a registered not-for-profit organization or academic institution.
- The research must be led by an academic researcher or academic research organization with the capacity to undertake the research.
- The research (products, processes, contacts, expertise, etc.) must be relevant to the Canadian agriculture sector and be transferable beyond the applicant, resulting in a public good or benefit; and
- The proposal must address a gap in risk management coverage and/or provide information that could lead to solutions to known challenges within existing programs.
- Domestic and international researchers are encouraged to apply. All applicants, including researchers outside Canada, must clearly demonstrate how their proposal is relevant to Canadian industry.
- Preference may also be given to proposals that:
- Are national in scope;
- Engage a not-for-profit agricultural industry partner, such as an industry organization representing agriculture, agri-business or agri-products stakeholders in Canada, i.e. producer associations, commodity groups, farm services associations, cooperatives, mutual insurance companies or reciprocals; and/or,
- Support improved risk management for under-represented groups in agriculture, i.e. Indigenous farmers, land managers councils and communities; women in agriculture; young and beginning farmers; official language minority populations; and/or farmers with disabilities. Applications will be screened based on merit, as well as the capacity of the proposed research to support development of an alternative risk management tool to enhance market returns, or to improve an existing risk management tool.
- Successful proposals will:
- Be a conceptual research paper that could lead to a research and development project to further develop a potentially marketable tool; or,
- Lead to a marketable tool directly that could then be delivered federally, provincially/territorially, or by the private sector.
How to Apply
To be considered for ARI Microgrant funding, all portions of the application made through the CFA process must be submitted at the address given on the website.
