The U.S. Department of Commerce is inviting applications for Social, Behavioral, and Economic Research Needs in Aquaculture.
Program Priorities
This competition will support research projects that will address critical gaps in social behavioral, and economic knowledge as it relates to U.S. aquaculture and the communities impacted and served by it. For this competition, the word aquaculture encompasses the techniques, communities, and stakeholders working with production of protein from marine (ocean, coastal and Great Lakes) systems, and traditional and indigenous practices.
Successful applications will propose to complete at least one of the following:
- Analyses of aquaculture business models that involve collaborative or cooperative relationships with commercial fishing and/or conservation communities;
- Assessments that identify local, state, and/or federal regulatory and policy barriers to entry and/or expansion for commercial aquaculture;
- Assessments that identify social and cultural perceptions of commercial aquaculture production and products in the United States;
- Economic analyses, including modelling, that evaluates the relative cost and value of different aquaculture systems, species, as well as major components of production and distribution.

Eligibility Criteria
- The following entities are eligible and encouraged to participate in this funding opportunity: any individual; any public or private corporation, partnership, or other association or entity (including any Sea Grant College, Sea Grant Institute or other institution); or any State, political subdivision of a State, Tribal government or agency or officer thereof.
- Federal agencies and their personnel are not permitted to receive federal funding under this competition; however, federal scientists and other employees can serve as uncompensated partners or co-Principal Investigators on applications.
- Federal labs and offices can also make available specialized expertise, facilities or equipment to applicants but cannot be compensated under this competition for their use, nor can the value of such assets be used as match.
