The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) in Mongolia is pleased to announce that application is now open for the LEAD Mongolia 2020 U.S. Exchange Program implemented by World Learning.
The LEAD Mongolia 2020 U.S. Exchange Program is looking for 30 qualified Mongolian changemakers from across the country to take part in this important initiative. LEAD Mongolia will help to shape the next generation of democratic champions through a variety of leadership opportunities, a three-week U.S. exchange, skills building training, and project implementation. The program focuses on following three policy challenges specific to Mongolia: environment and urbanization, poverty alleviation and unemployment, and transparency and anti-corruption.
LEAD Highlights
- Democratic Foundations Workshop: A week-long experiential learning workshop to build advocacy skills, civic engagement and knowledge of good governance. (6 days, July – August 2020)
- Pre-Departure Orientation: Full day training on “essentials” ahead of the exchange program and travel to the U.S. (1 day, September 2020)
- U.S. Exchange Program: LEAD Mongolia Fellows will travel to the United States to attend a three-week intensive academic program at the University of Virginia (UVA) Center for Politics as well as World Learning headquarters in Washington, D.C. You will learn more about advocacy and community mobilization, conflict resolution, and project design and implementation. During this time in the U.S, participants will be given the opportunity to meet with American lawmakers, NGOs, and other advocates to learn from America’s experience with policy making and in driving forward positive democratic change. (3 weeks, September – October 2020)
- Re-Entry Workshop: A two-day workshop to solidify civic action plans and meet with your mentors. (2 days, Late October 2020)
- Project Implementation: After the U.S. Exchange, LEAD Mongolia Fellows will return to Mongolia and start putting their new ideas, knowledge, and skills into action through team project action planning implementation. Through the action planning process, LEAD Mongolia Fellows will design and implement projects in teams on issues important to them in the selected policy theme. LEAD Mongolia will focus on three important policy themes: (1)
- Environment and Urbanization, (2) Poverty Alleviation and Unemployment, and (3) Transparency and Anti-corruption. The LEAD Mongolia action planning process will begin as soon as you join the program and team projects will be developed and finalized throughout the course of the program. (Up to 4 hours weekly, December 2020 – April 2021)
- LEAD Alliance Summit: A three-day opportunity to meet and work with other leaders from Bhutan, Myanmar, and Kyrgyzstan. (3 days, February 2021)

Eligibility Criteria
- The LEAD Mongolia 2020 U.S. Exchange Program is open to applicants between the ages of 25 and 40 who are able to articulate their unique vision for positive democratic development in Mongolia.
- Have a minimum of 3 years’ professional work experience.
- Demonstrate a reasonably strong command of English
- Passionate about bringing positive change in your community
- Have demonstrated appreciation of the inherent dignity and value of all people
