The Center for Disease Control and Prevention is currently seeking applications for its program entitled “Strengthening the National Institutes of Health in the Republic of Mozambique under the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR)” with an aim to conduct disease surveillance, monitoring and evaluation of public health programs, outbreak investigations, laboratory science, training of health professionals, and other functions vital to the country’s public health response. Although a part of the Ministry of Health (MoH), the INS functions with a certain degree of autonomy and has unique responsibilities in the areas of surveillance, laboratory support, and evaluation.
The focus of this direct support to the INS is to build the material and human resources to strengthen and improve the capacity of the INS to generate timely and quality information available for public health program interventions in Mozambique.
The purpose of this opportunity is to strengthen and support the INS in Mozambique. In particular it seeks to improve INS’s operational capacity in the fields of laboratory systems and testing, disease surveillance, monitoring and evaluation, and human resources. Improvements in these key areas should result in improved evidence-based programs for the prevention and control of HIV and other public health issues driven by locally produced data, ultimately resulting public health outcomes, including decreased HIV incidence, and improve public health capacity in Mozambique.
Aims
- Strengthen the capacity of the integrated national laboratory network and national reference laboratories to provide quality laboratory services for clinical diagnosis, screening, research, and surveillance;
- Strengthen capacity of the INS to implement surveillance and public health evaluations in Mozambique;
- Implement national and sentinel surveillance in Mozambique, including HDSS activities;
- Monitor and evaluate programs related to improving health and safety in Mozambique;
- Increase and support the capacity of the INS to gather, analyze, disseminate, and use timely and accurate data on health indicators in Mozambique; and
- Improve the human resource capacity of the INS and national health systems through scholarships and training programs.
