The Birds Canada is accepting applications for the Community Grant Program to increase the understanding, appreciation, and conservation of birds in Canada.
The Birds Canada Community Grant is funded with revenue generated by participants of the Birds Canada Birdathon.
Objectives
- Understand: Contribute to the understanding of birds in their natural environment
- Appreciate: Increase appreciation of birds and their habitats among people in Canada
- Conserve: Advance the conservation of birds in Canada
Funding Information
- The total amount of funding available each year is up to $25,000. Typically, successful applicants receive between $2,000 and $8,000; however, smaller and larger requests are eligible.
Duration
- Approved projects can occur between 1 April 2025 and 31 March 2026
Where can projects take place?
- Project activities must take place in Canada or in areas (e.g., wintering grounds or migration routes) that are used by migratory bird species that spend part of the year in Canada
Outcomes
- Examples of the types of outcomes they like to support are listed below. Please note these are examples only and project eligibility is not limited to this list:
- Improve understanding of key knowledge gaps for birds by undertaking a targeted research or field project.
- Improve understanding of local bird species at risk occurrence by undertaking a volunteer-led survey.
- Increase participation of youth and amateur naturalists in bird monitoring and conservation by providing skill-building opportunities.
- Increase understanding or protection of birds through undertaking a study guided by Etuaptmumk (Two-eyed Seeing, the practice of viewing the world through both Indigenous and Western knowledge systems).
- Increase appreciation of birds and their habitat through outreach that celebrates birds, an important place for birds, or culturally important birds to Indigenous communities.
- Reduce barriers to birds and birding among underserved communities through inclusive events or workshops
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants must be based in Canada. They especially welcome applications from small organizations that have difficulty getting funding elsewhere.
- Eligible applicants include:
- Registered charities or non-profit organizations
- Indigenous Nations, governments, communities, or organizations
- Educational institutions
- Ineligible applicants include:
- For-profit organizations
- Municipal, provincial, or federal government agencies
- Persons applying as individuals
Ineligibility Criteria
- Projects that do not contribute to at least one of the Program’s objectives
- Lobbying, political advocacy, or partisan activities that promote a particular social, political, or economic point of view
- Research projects that entail the sacrificing or harm of study subjects
- Activities required as part of a provincial or federal permit
- Bird rehabilitation
- Land acquisition
