Deadline: 01-Sep-2025
The Artist in Residence Program is designed to support individual artists who wish to participate in residencies and New Brunswick organizations that host professional artists. It allows artists to focus on specific creative projects, offering them space and time outside their regular environments. These residencies can include creating or developing new or in-progress work, mentorship, skill-building, expanding professional networks, or engaging with the community.
Artists in residence are expected to contribute to public understanding and appreciation of the arts through interaction with the hosting organization’s community. The program has two components: one for individual artists to take part in residencies in New Brunswick, Quebec (under a special agreement), or abroad, and another for organizations to host artists in residence.
Grants of up to $10,000 are available. Eligible expenses include artist fees or subsistence (recommended up to $2,500 per month), materials and services such as consumables, space and equipment rental, production costs, rights purchases, as well as travel, transportation, and accommodation directly related to the residency. Ineligible expenses include capital purchases like equipment, and operational or administrative costs for the host organization.
Projects must involve a confirmed residency invitation, with residencies lasting up to 12 months. These may include in-person, virtual, or hybrid arrangements, and must start after the application submission date. Collaborative projects must include detailed information about co-creators. Artistic disciplines supported include architecture, craft, dance, literary arts, media arts, multidisciplinary arts, music, theatre, and visual arts.
Projects produced in a non-professional context, for academic credit, as part of employment duties, or for corporate or industrial purposes are not eligible. Applicants must be Canadian citizens, permanent residents, First Nations affiliates, or individuals with an active permanent residency application. They must have lived in New Brunswick for at least one year and qualify as professional artists according to artsnb guidelines. Any previous grant recipients must have submitted their final reports.
Applications must include a project description (maximum 350 words), a balanced budget, artist CV, samples of work, an official invitation letter from the host, and supporting documents for any artistic collaborators.
