Deadline: 15-Oct-2025
The Amref Health Africa invite bold, innovative proposals from research institutions and multi-stakeholder consortia ready to deliver transformative research on the climate-health nexus in Eastern and Southern Africa.
The specific objectives of the Project are: To generate intersectional, disaggregated climate-health data for integrated program design in East and Southern Africa. To equip policymakers at subnational, national, regional, and global levels with newly available climate-health data that is disaggregated, gender-responsive, and intersectional, enabling them to design evidence-based policies and programs that deliver sustained impact.
To strengthen capacities of individuals, organizations and networks in assessing, designing, informing and implementing climate-resilient health systems approaches. To enhance health systems’ surge capacity and prepare health systems’ workforces to respond to climate-induced health risks and shocks in community and primary healthcare settings.
The Hub has identified critical research priority areas aimed at enhancing health systems in Eastern and Southern Africa, informed by stakeholder consultations and existing landscape analyses. This Call for Proposals (CfP) invites research institutions, universities, and other entities focused on the intersection of climate change and health to contribute to regional knowledge generation and inform policy actions. Proposals should address one or more priority research questions identified through stakeholder consultations organized by the Hub.
The thematic areas highlighted include Responsive, inclusive, and interoperable Climate-Health Data & information systems, focusing on strengthening climate–health data systems to inform evidence-based decision-making and resilient health programming, and Skilled diverse, fit-for-purpose health workforce for climate resilience, emphasizing the development of skills, diversity, and surge capacity for climate-resilient health service delivery. Equitable inclusive Climate Health Economics, Policy and Systems Research examines the costs of climate-sensitive diseases, economic trade-offs, innovative financing, and governance models for cross-sectoral coordination.
Climate-sensitive Diseases and Health Outcomes aims to improve predictive modeling, early warning, and surveillance of climate-sensitive diseases. Gender Equity, and Vulnerable Populations emphasizes research on equitable, gender-responsive health policies and services, exploring climate change impacts on maternal health, education, workforce participation, and gender-based violence.
Funding support ranges from small grants of up to USD 50,000 for pilot studies to large grants of up to USD 250,000 for comprehensive projects, with project durations from 12 to 24 months. Eligible costs include professional fees, fieldwork, workshops, travel, equipment, specialized services, and up to 13% overhead costs.
The Hub is seeking responses from Angola, Botswana, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda, encouraging cross-border collaboration and multi-country research approaches where feasible.
Research teams must be based in or have active collaborations within the eligible countries and may include research institutions, universities, NGOs, civil society organizations, private sector partners, and regional networks. Applicants are required to demonstrate strong organizational management, governance, and research track record, as well as experience in gender analysis and promoting equity and inclusion in research activities. They must also commit to stakeholder engagement, data sharing, and adherence to ethical and safeguarding principles.
This two-stage application process begins with an Expression of Interest, followed by an invitation to submit a full proposal. Key evaluation criteria include clarity of research problem, justification, research questions and objectives, methodology, policy relevance, research team capacity, project schedule, budget, and data management plan. Applicants are encouraged to ensure gender and inclusion principles are integrated across all sections of the proposal and to focus on underserved groups using an intersectional approach. The deadline for applications is 15 October 2025.
