The U.S. Mission to South Africa and the Cultural Heritage Center (“the Center”) of the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs are seeking applicants for its 2017 Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP) Small Grants Competition with an aim to preserve cultural sites or objects and museum collections of historical or cultural significance to South Africans.
Priorities
- Directly support U.S. treaty or bilateral agreement obligations, such as cultural property protection agreements
- Support the preservation of inscribed UNESCO World Heritage sites
- Support disaster risk reduction for cultural heritage and post-disaster cultural heritage recovery in seismically active and other disaster-prone areas; and
- Engage women, youth, or under-served communities.
Funding Information
Individual awards can range from $10,000 to $200,000.
Application Requirements
AFCP prioritizes project activities that are appropriate and in keeping with international standards for the preservation of cultural heritage. These activities may involve:
- Cultural Sites: conservation of an ancient or historic building, preservation of an archaeological site, or documentation of cultural sites in a region for preservation purposes.
- Cultural Objects and collections: conservation treatment of an object or collection of objects; needs assessment of a collection with respect to its condition and strategies for improving its state of conservation; inventory of a collection for conservation and protection purposes; the creation of safe environments for storage or display of collections; or specialized training in the care and preservation of collections.
- Forms of Traditional Cultural Expression: documentation and audiovisual recording of traditional music and dance forms for broad dissemination as the means of teaching them and furthering their preservation; or support for training in the preservation of traditional applied arts or crafts that are in danger of extinction.
Eligible Projects
The Center defines eligible project applicants as reputable and accountable non-commercial entities, such as non-governmental organizations, museums, ministries of culture, or similar institutions and organizations that are able to demonstrate that they have the requisite experience and capacity to manage projects to preserve cultural heritage.
How to Apply
- The application procedure consists of two phases:
- Phase1: Letter of Intent
- Phase2: Full Proposals (Shortlisted Organizations Only)
- In the first instance, the letter of intent should not exceed two pages and should include the title, project dates, short description of the project, and overview of historical or cultural significance to South Africa.
