United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) is seeking proposals from eligible entities for conducting of baseline study for the Girls Access to Education (GATE) Project in Sierra Leone with an aim to improve girl’s education outcomes including transition and completion rates for girls at secondary school level by ensuring that girls remain in schools that are safe and support learning.
UNICEF will work through MEST and NGO partners to improve girl’s education outcomes promote equity and gender equality in the schools by implementing a package of gender-sensitive and responsive interventions and ensure a safe school environment that is conducive for learning in the targeted 926 JSSs across 14 districts.
The project will be implemented by MEST and Non-Governmental organisations (NGOs) in close collaboration with UNICEF, District Education Offices (DEOs), Local Councils (LCs), Line Ministers, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and community/school-based structures.
Expected Outcomes
- Improved and safe learning environment for girls in 926 Junior Secondary Schools (JSSs)
- Increased number of upper primary and JSS girls drop-out, who attended the learning centres, returning to mainstream school
- 300 community based platforms including school structures actively engaged to promote girls safety and participation in school.
Focus Areas
- Create transformative and accountable leadership at school level to engage with the wider school community to discuss issues around school-related gender-based violence (SRGBV) and take actions to ensure girls safety and participation in school.
- Develop school safety protocols including self-assessment checklist and clear, accessible and confidential reporting and referral mechanism for SRGBV in targeted schools.
- Empower girls to speak up as well as working with boys to ensure violence free school
