Nominations for the 10th edition of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Planning (SUMP) Award are now open, with this year’s award focusing on the theme “Safe and Healthy with Sustainable Mobility”.
The European Commission’s award for sustainable urban mobility planning was launched in 2012. The aim of the award is to encourage the adoption of Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs) by local authorities across Europe and to reward outstanding achievements in each year’s thematic priority area.
The SUMP Award is separate to the EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK Award, but remains complementary. The EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK Award is given to municipalities for their outstanding activities during EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK on 16-22 September, whereas the SUMP Award recognises local and regional authorities for excellence in sustainable urban mobility planning.
- The Award Ceremony will take place in Brussels in March or April 2022, where only then will the winner be revealed. Only the finalists will receive official notification by January 2022.
- Political or high-level representatives of the three finalists will be invited to attend the Award Ceremony, where the winner will receive a trophy from the European Commissioner for Transport.
- The winner and the two finalists will benefit from European visibility, including coverage in future SUMP Guidelines, through EU social media channels, and on the ELTIS portal, and speaking and presentation opportunities at relevant events.
- Applicants are not required to have completed the entire process of developing and implementing a Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan in order to be eligible for the award.
- The competition is open to local authorities from the European Union, EU Candidate Countries, Potential EU Candidate Countries that are part of the Stabilisation and Association Process (SAP), European Economic Area (EEA), European Free Trade Area countries (EFTA), or the Eastern Partnership (EaP). Applications are open to local public authorities that have legal competence in developing and implementing a Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan on their territory.
- The contact person for each application must be a representative of a public authority. Consultancies and transport operators are not eligible. In case of doubt, applicants will be contacted to provide proof of their legal status as a local or regional public authority.
- The 9th SUMP award winner is not eligible to apply for this year’s edition of the award.
Evaluation Criteria
- Road safety targets to reach the objectives of “Vision zero”. How the applicant interlinks road safety and health objectives in its SUMP.
- The city has a consistent and realistic strategy to improve the physical and mental health of the population.
- The city integrated the health sector (or other sectors) to achieve a common strategy for public health improvement and health care provision.
- The city acts to improve public transportation whilst restoring confidence in the service.
- Good practices to link new mobility services to the overall objectives of the SUMP.
