Auckland Council has launched Cultural Initiatives Fund – Papakainga and Maori Housing Grant that support iwi, hapu, and whanau, and increase opportunities for papakainga development within Tamaki Makaurau.

Outcomes
- Mana Whenua to re-establish ancestral connection through the establishment of papakainga within their traditional rohe.
- Maori landowners to overcome the barriers associated with the development of papakainga on Maori land administered under the Te Ture Whenua Maori Act 1993.
- Marae to become self-sustaining and thriving through opportunities for papakainga housing.
- Communal ownership models that enable intergenerational equity.
- Housing choices that reflect Maori values and Tikanga.
Eligibility Criteria
- be represented by a trust, authority, or other formally recognized body, or gazetted or set apart as a Maori Reservation
- have appropriate governance and management structures, policies and processes in place that reflect Tikanga Maori
- be not-for-profit.
