The Regional Fund for Digital Innovation in Latin America and the Caribbean (FRIDA) has announced its call for proposals 2017 to provide financial support for research projects and innovative initiatives that seek to explore the potential of information and communication technologies to promote social and economic development in the region and access to the Internet.
Funding Information
In 2017, FRIDA will offer a single grant of US $ 20,000. The selected project will have 12 months for the execution of activities.
Thematic Category
In this cycle only applications will be accepted around the following thematic category:
Development of Internet. Innovative solutions for the development of an open, stable and secure Internet, including topics such as access, infrastructure, Internet of Things, IPv6, cybersecurity, open standards and internet governance.
Those projects interested in applying must have 3 main characteristics.
- Technical component. The project should address the development of the Internet as a central theme, and explain the technical component around which the proposal will be developed.
- Innovation component. The projects presented should propose an innovative approach to address specific problems facing the region in the development of the Internet. That is, new strategies, concepts, ideas, methods and processes that respond to the specific needs and achieve to expand and strengthen the development of the Internet should be proposed.
- Social impact component. Understanding the social role played by the Internet, the proposed projects should seek to generate social value and demonstrate how they will meet the needs of specific communities.
Eligibility Criteria
- They may apply for work teams from civil society organizations, public and private universities, state agencies and private enterprises whose activities are aligned with the priorities of the program. Individual applications will not be accepted.
- The entities that postulate must have headquarters in countries of Latin America and the Caribbean.
- The projects must be developed exclusively within Latin America and the Caribbean.

- Opening of the call: Wednesday, May 10, 2017
- Final closing of applications: Friday, June 23, 2017 until 23: 59hs (UTC-3).
- Preselection: Monday, June 26 – Friday, July 7, 2017
- Proposed detailed presentation projects shortlisted: Monday 10 July – Friday 28 July 2017.
- Final selection process: Monday, July 31 – Friday, August 25, 2017
- Announcement of results: Wednesday, August 30, 2017
