Deadline: 13-Dec-22
The International Climate Initiative is seeking applications for the Medium Grants Programme.
The goals of the IKI Medium Grants are to test innovative bottom-up approaches to fulfilling the Paris and CBD Agreements, which can be taken up by other non-governmental actors, to strengthen capacities (of the implementing organizations and partners as well as other civil society actors in the partner countries as knowledge carrier and implementation partner in the climate area) as well as the global networking of civil society between North and South.
The IKI Medium Grants funding programme therefore addresses civil society actors based in Germany by the time of the grant approval that work in collaboration with local partners in selected ODA-eligible implementing countries to put measures in place to intensify North-South cooperation on climate action, adaptation to the impacts of climate change and biodiversity conservation. The programme explicitly aims to strengthen civil society actors and their international networks. Specifically, IKI Medium Grants support project activities that address innovative, bottom-up contributions for implementing the Paris Agreement and the Convention on Biological Diversity. To achieve this, varying funding priorities are set each year, for which interested parties can apply with innovative project ideas.
The program is thus intended to contribute to picking up on civil society voices Partner governments in the overall societal transformation process towards CO2 neutrality as well as internationally networked civil society cooperation on climate protection and adaptation to climate change and biodiversity conservation
The IKI is implemented by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection (BMWK) in close cooperation with them Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) and the Federal Foreign Office (AA).
Thematic Funding Priorities
- Acceleration of Net Zero – climate paths by promoting local Climate protection measures by and for young people
- Innovative cooperation between civil society and the private sector for integrated biodiversity and climate protection
Through thematic and country-specific calls, IKI primarily funds large-volume projects that aim to accelerate the transformation to a sustainable, low-emissions economy and supply structure. However, implementing the Paris Agreement and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) also requires increasing the capacity of smaller civil society actors in developing and emerging countries as well as the effective participation of all social groups. This is exactly where the IKI programmes for small projects come in.
Funding Priorities
- A grant of between EUR 300,000 and a maximum of EUR 800,000 can be granted per project. Work on projects in the funding program should be completed within a period of 24 to a maximum of 36 months. Follow-up financing is not planned.
Type of Funding
- The financing usually takes the form of part financing. The recipients of grants must participate appropriately in the financing of the purpose to be promoted, taking into account their financial strength. The appropriate use of own funds can only be decided on a case-by-case basis. There is no stipulated minimum amount for the deductible. Overall, it must be demonstrated that the project financing can be secured on the basis of the planned funding, own funds and, if necessary, other third-party funds. Furthermore, it must be confirmed that the project activities have not already received financial support from a public body in the Federal Republic of Germany. As part of the application review, the funding rate is determined for each application, taking into account the expenses required for the project and the possible own and third-party funds.
Eligibility Criteria
- Funding is available for non-profit civil society organisations (non-governmental organisations, associations, foundations, think tanks) and academic institutions (universities and research institutions), as well as non-profit companies that have a registered office in Germany at the time of the grant approval. These organisations must enter into a partnership with one or two local implementing organisations based in the implementing country or region.
- The selection procedure for IKI Medium Grants is in two stages. In the first stage, project outlines are submitted. After positive assessment, comprehensive project proposals are elaborated in the second stage of the procedure.
