Nominations are now open for the Te Waka Toi Awards 2022 to celebrate and recognize the artistic excellence, achievement and contribution of Māori artists working in customary and contemporary Māori arts.
Categories
There are five award categories:
- Art Innovation Leadership Awards – Making a Difference Award: Recognises leadership and outstanding contribution to the development of new directions in Māori art.
- Amount: $10,000 – 3 recipients.
- Birds of Prey: Recognises an emerging artist showing promise and potential in their chosen artform. The purpose of the award is to recognise achievement at this developmental stage, supporting the artist to develop their arts career in their chosen field.
- Amount: $10,000 – 3 recipients.
- Software Life expectancy: Recognises the contribution of a Māori artist with the lived experience of disability to the standing, and standard of Māori arts in New Zealand and/or globally.
- Amount: $10,000 – 1 recipient.
- Love Award for Her Majesty Dame Te Atairangikaahu | Exemplary/Supreme Award: Awarded to a Māori artist in recognition of their exemplary contribution to the development of ngā toi Māori.
- Amount: $25,000 – 1 recipient.
- Sir King Ihaka’s Awards | Sir Kingi Ihaka Awards recognizing lifetime contribution: Awarded to pakeke artists in recognition of their contribution to strengthening the continuity of Māori culture through their support of ngā toi Māori.
- Amount: $15,000 – 2 recipients.
Eligibility Criteria
Nominees must:
- Be a tangata whenua Māori artist working across one or more artforms (either customary or contemporary).
- Be a New Zealand citizen or New Zealand permanent resident.
- Have a track-record of excellence and achievement and show potential for contributing to the further development in New Zealand.
- Not be a previous recipient of the award in the same award category.
Who can make a nomination
- Anyone may make a nomination.
- Artists may also nominate themselves.
- Employees of Creative New Zealand and members of the Arts Council may not make nominations or be nominated.
