The World Food Programme is launching a targeted emergency response in Jowzjan province, Afghanistan, aimed at addressing the urgent food needs of severely vulnerable households.
The programme focuses on delivering nutrition-sensitive, unconditional food assistance to prevent further deterioration in food security and nutritional status among the region’s most at-risk communities.
Operating under WFP’s mandate to combat hunger and promote food security, the initiative will provide both cash and food-based support to households identified as food-insecure. The assistance is designed to be immediate and life-sustaining, targeting families in districts where malnutrition and food shortages are most acute.
By implementing a combination of cash and food assistance, the programme aims to offer flexibility to beneficiaries while also strengthening local food markets. The focus on nutrition-sensitive aid ensures that the assistance provided meets not only caloric needs but also contributes to improved dietary diversity and better health outcomes, particularly for children and pregnant or breastfeeding women.
This intervention highlights WFP’s continued commitment to stabilising vulnerable populations in crisis-affected areas and strengthening their resilience against future shocks. The programme’s success will be measured by its ability to maintain or improve household food security and prevent a rise in malnutrition during periods of heightened vulnerability.
