The Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Consulate General Karachi (PAS Karachi), (hereinafter known as PAS Karachi) has announced an open competition for assistance awards through this Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO), contingent on funding availability, through the Public Diplomacy Grants Program. The projects set forth in this NOFO create awareness about Gender-Based Violence (GBV) through a digital campaign, expand access to information on women’s issues, and increase capacity of journalists to develop media content with improved and more relevant context.
PAS Karachi programs are a key component of U.S. Government Public Diplomacy efforts in Pakistan, creating valuable opportunities for the Mission to engage key audiences, as well as lasting professional, educational, and personal opportunities for Pakistani program participants. Proposal funded under this award will further the following U.S. Mission to Pakistan’s public diplomacy goals:
- Strengthen people-to-people ties between the United States and Pakistan through shared information, experiences, exchanges, and/or expertise.
- Strengthen civil society and local organizations to build long-term, self-sustaining relationships and linkages between U.S. and Pakistani organizations, including capacity building support for Pakistani organizations.
- Promote community cohesion through positive messages and inclusive perspectives that increase social tolerance and counter extremist narratives.
Project Goals and Objectives
- Project 1: Combatting Gender-Based Violence (GBV) through Diverse Media Tools:
- Goal: Strengthen civil society and resiliency of communities by increasing the capacity of local Pakistani organizations.
- Objective 1: Increased awareness and understanding of GBV and its impact on local communities
- Objective 2: Participants are provided information on addressing, combatting, and preventing GBV in their local communities.
- Objective 3: Decrease stigma through exercises that humanize the victims of GBV.
- Project 2: Innovative Gender Equality Reporting through Diverse Media Tools:
- Goal: Expand access to information on women’s issues and increase capacity of journalists to develop media content with improved and more relevant context.
- Objective 1: Expand awareness and recognition of the importance of gender-sensitive journalism reporting.
- Objective 2: Facilitate journalists application of gender-sensitive knowledge and reporting
- Objective 3: Participants share skills and techniques for effectively reporting on women’s issues with journalism and media students and working journalists.
Participants and Audiences
- Project 1: Combatting GBV– The target audience includes women and men between the ages of 15-35 from both rural and urban areas in all four Pakistan provinces and Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) and secondary and tertiary students and other youth between the ages of 15-35 in both urban and rural areas across Sindh and Balochistan.
- Project 2: Gender Equality Reporting– The target audience includes male and female participants, with a minimum of 50% females, working journalists between the ages of 25-35, and journalism and media university students between the ages of 18-24 in Sindh and Balochistan.
Funding Information
- Project 1: The award floor is $60,000; the award ceiling is $70,000.
- Project 2: The award floor is $50,000; the award ceiling is $75,000.
- Duration of Award: All proposals should propose one (1) year only of activities.
Eligible Applicants
- Submissions are encouraged from U.S. and Pakistani registered not-for-profit, civil society /non-governmental organizations, and educational institutions.
- At least two (2) years of programming experience is preferred.
- Applicants are expected to document prior programming experience if selected under this NOFO, and a copy of the organization’s registration must accompany the proposal.
- U.S.-based non-profit organizations must provide a copy of their IRS determination letter.
- Pakistan-based non-profit organizations must submit a copy of their certificate of registration from the appropriate government organization.
