Deadline: 25-Oct-2025
The Climate Change and Health Innovation Hub for West and Central Africa (CHINNOVA) is an initiative led by the Association of African Universities (AAU) in collaboration with the West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use (WASCAL), Institut Pasteur de la Côte d’Ivoire (IPCI), and Omar Bongo University (UOB).
The program is designed to strengthen the region’s research capacity by building and managing a network of researchers working at the intersection of climate change and health.
Through support from the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), CHINNOVA will fund between eight to ten research proposals that address critical challenges in West and Central Africa. The final number of sub-grants and funding allocations will depend on the quality of applications and the availability of resources. Projects are expected to run for up to 18 months, providing sufficient time for comprehensive research, data analysis, stakeholder engagement, dissemination of results, and knowledge sharing across the CHINNOVA network.
The first call for proposals under CHINNOVA aims to generate high-quality, context-specific evidence on how climate change impacts health in the region. It encourages projects that test innovative solutions to improve climate resilience, enhance health system adaptability, and promote community well-being. A core objective is to build institutional and regional research capacity, enabling African organizations to take a leading role in shaping and sustaining climate-health agendas. The call also emphasizes collaboration across sectors, disciplines, and borders to accelerate learning and scale effective approaches that benefit multiple communities.
Applications are open to research institutions, universities, and multi-stakeholder consortia working on climate-health-related initiatives in eligible countries across West and Central Africa. Consortia may include partnerships among academic institutions, NGOs, civil society organizations, and private sector entities. Multi-country research collaborations are welcome, provided that the proposed scope is well-defined and supported by an appropriate budget. Individual applications will not be accepted, as the program seeks to strengthen established institutions that can ensure sustainability, knowledge translation, and policy relevance.
Applicants are expected to demonstrate diverse expertise, gender balance, and inclusion of both senior and emerging researchers to foster mentorship and capacity building. The call encourages projects that adhere to CHINNOVA’s principles of excellence, equity, and contextual relevance while aligning with the thematic focus on building climate-resilient health systems. All successful projects will contribute to advancing regional research leadership and producing evidence that supports effective adaptation strategies for the health impacts of climate change in Africa.
