Tanzania Forest Fund (TaFF) is seeking proposals for its Small Grants program to mobilize funds for sustainable financing the management of forest resources for the present and future generations.
Tanzania Forest Fund (abbreviated as ‘TaFF’) is Public Conservation Trust Fund established under sections 79 to 83 of the Forest Act Cap. 323, as a mechanism to provide long term, reliable and sustainable financial support for enhancing conservation and management of forest resources in mainland Tanzania. The Fund was made operational in July 2010 through Treasury Circular No. 4 of 2009 and embarked in full implementation of its functions in July 2011. The Fund is under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism and governed by a Board of Trustees.
Priority Areas of Funding
Tanzania Forest Fund will provide/offer grants to project proposals focusing on the following priority areas:
- Forest resources protection, conservation, management and sustainable use of forest resources. In 2019 project proposals focusing on rehabilitation of degraded forest reserves/natural forests (in terms of enrichment planting, promoting natural regeneration or converting degraded forests into forest plantations), will be given priority in receiving Tanzania Forest Fund’s grants. Other areas/activities which will be considered eligible for
- TaFF funding in 2019 are elucidated hereunder:
- Boundary establishment and demarcation in forest reserves/natural forests.
- Promoting participatory forest management and other best practices in the management of forest resources.
- Tree nurseries establishment and tree planting.
- Production and use of alternative energy sources.
- Improvement of livelihood of communities living adjacent to the forest resource base, particularly beekeeping projects geared at improving forest conservation. In 2019 call of project proposals, all individuals and institutions/organizations interested in submitting project proposals under this priority area, will compete on sub-themes shown hereunder:
- Support existing and facilitate establishment of beekeeping groups and support them with modern beehives, necessary equipment and tools, necessary training and market searching for the purpose of assisting beekeeping groups to practice commercial beekeeping.
- Support existing and facilitate establishment of centres for collecting honey and other products from beekeeping.
- Support existing and facilitate establishment of centres for processing and packaging honey and other products from beekeeping.
- Training, equipment, tools and new technology for facilitating establishment of small scale industries/firms for processing, packaging, labelling and value addition to honey and other products from beekeeping.
- Training, equipment, tools and new technology for facilitating revival of beekeeping industries/firms which are not operating.
- Kindly be informed that, beekeeping projects which will be submitted from Tabora, Geita, Katavi, Rukwa, Kigoma, Shinyanga, Mbeya na Songwe regions will be given priority
- Research in forestry and beekeeping. Priority will be given to research which will contribute to improving protection, conservation and management of forest resources, as well as improving quantity, quality and value addition to products from beekeeping.
Funding Information
Small Grants – amounts not exceeding Tanzania Shillings (TZS) 5 million.
Types of Assistance
Tanzania Forest Fund offers three types of assistance to grantees as elucidated hereunder:
- Monetary assistance – Tanzania Forest Fund could provide financial assistance to support implementation of approved interventions/project activities.
- Material assistance – The Fund could provide required materials, tools, technology, facilities and equipment.
- Technical assistance – The Fund could provide technical assistance to grantees by hiring professionals to offer the requested services. In 2019, the Fund will support short course training on how to improve beekeeping practices; beehives production; tree nurseries establishment; tree planting and protection, conservation, sustainable use and management of forest resources.
Eligibility Criteria
- Project proposals from individuals, local community groups, non-governmental organizations, faith based organizations, academic institutions, non-academic institutions, research based institutions, private sector, central government ministries, departments and agencies as well as local government authorities are invited. However, all organizations including community groups must be legally registered and evidence of registration should be attached to the project proposals.
- Individual applicants should submit letters from two respected/reputable lawfully accepted Guarantors, while individual research projects will be administered through legally established organizations/institutions.
- Kindly be informed that, one Guarantor for individual applicants (who are not researchers), should be Village/Street Executive Officer of the village/street where the applicant reside, and if the area of project implementation is different from residential area, a letter from Village/Street Executive Officer of the village/street where the project will be implemented should also be submitted.
