Aids Healthcare Foundation (AHF), through its office for Latin America and the Caribbean, with the support of the UNESCO Regional Office for Education in Latin America and the Caribbean (OREALC / UNESCO Santiago), calls to present papers to the third edition of the Investigative Journalism Contest on HIV and AIDS in Latin America and the Caribbean.
The AHF recognizes the work of communicators and media as essential for society and governments to have adequate information to deal with the HIV and AIDS epidemic, which remains a top-level public health issue at the national level and global.
AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) is an international non-profit foundation based in Los Angeles, United States. It provides HIV prevention, testing and healthcare services to more than one million people in 41 countries around the world.
In Latin America and the Caribbean, it has a presence in 14 countries, in which it offers free rapid tests and links with health services from government and non-government institutions to ensure prevention and treatment in the communities. Together with more than 150 civil society organizations allied in the region, the AHF advocates better access to evidence and, in particular, timely treatment without stigma or discrimination.
Purpose
The purpose of the award is to recognize the informative work of journalism professionals on issues related to:
- Prevention – or lack thereof – of new HIV infections, including access to condoms.
- The state of provision in the delivery of services or the performance of actions to increase the awareness of HIV status.
- Access – or lack – to quality HIV care.
- The discrimination experienced by people living with HIV, the stigma that still surrounds them.
- Cultural barriers that affect getting tested that diagnose infection and health care.
- The life stories of people living with HIV.
- Others of social pertinence, related to the subject, according to the situation of each country.

Award Information
- There will be one winner per category in each country. The winners will receive a diploma and trophy in recognition and will participate along with award-winning journalists from other countries in the X International Conference on the HIV Sciences International on AIDS organized by the International AIDS Society (IAS), and preparatory activities to be held in the City of Mexico from July 23 to 27, 2019.
- AHF will pay airfare, lodging, meals and incidental expenses during the trip.
- All and all participants will receive a certificate of participation.
- For winning journalists from Mexico, a trip will be paid to Lima, Peru to participate in activities of AHF Peru, according to the 2019 calendar of the organization.
Eligibility Criteria
- The works of the candidates must have been disseminated between January 1, 2018 and February 28, 2019 in traditional or independent media.
- The works must have been published in national media.
- Two jobs can be delivered at the most per person (including those in which they participate by team, with the understanding that only one prize will be awarded per team, to the author or main author).
- Papers published in more than one format will compete in only one category.
- Journalistic pieces of research or publications in installments (chapters) of short stories will be accepted.
