Applications are now open for the “2020 Yale Young African Scholars Program (YYAS)” which is now entering its seventh year of programming.
YYAS is the flagship program of the Yale Africa Initiative and is designed to introduce secondary school students to the demanding university and financial aid application processes and requirements, as well as to make higher education more accessible to Africa’s most talented student leaders. This past July and August, YYAS brought together 294 secondary school students from 256 schools and 38 African nations.
The Initiative promotes African scholarship, contemporary discourse, and research at Yale and in Africa, strengthens Yale’s relationships with African institutions, increases career opportunities for Yale students across Africa, and attracts the best and the brightest African students to Yale.
Benefits
- To make YYAS accessible to students from all backgrounds, there is no tuition cost to participate in the Program.
- Room and board will be provided for all students, along with three meals a day.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of an African country.
- Applicant must be at least 14 years old by application deadline in order to be considered.
- Applicant must be able to participate in a rigorous academic curriculum conducted in English.
- If applicant attend school in the Northern Hemisphere, they must be graduating secondary school by earliest May/June 2021. If they attend school in the Southern Hemisphere, they must be graduating secondary school by earliest November/December 2020. Students who will graduate secondary school before August 2020 are NOT eligible to apply.
