Applications are now open for the Children’s Week Grants, an opportunity for the community to engage in a variety of activities that facilitate, support, and encourage children and their families to celebrate, play, and discover together.
Children’s Week is an international event designated by the United Nations and celebrated annually in the fourth week of October. Children’s Week 2024 will take place between 19 – 27 October.
Funding Information
- There is a total grant pool of $15,000 available.
- Applicants may ask for up to $750 to support community events and activities for children and families within the City of Greater Geelong municipality that take place during Children’s Week.
What you can apply for?
- Funding is offered for events and activities that celebrate the health, development and well-being of children. They should cater to all children aged between birth and twelve years and/or a relevant parenting activity for parents/carers who have children aged between birth and twelve years.
- Events and activities must be held within the City of Greater Geelong municipality and align with a key Article within the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).
- Whilst this year’s theme is based on UNCRC Article 24: ‘Children have the right to a clean and safe environment’, organisations may choose to link to a different UNCRC Article, considered a priority for their community.
- The important considerations that they are looking for this year:
- maximises involvement by children, families and local community with a preference for free events.
- is inclusive and accessible to people of all abilities, genders, social, economic and cultural backgrounds.
- event encourages engagement with new families.
- clearly identified theme taken from the UNCRC and why it is important to your community/group.
- the event is well-planned.
Examples of Activities
- Active/Physical focus – Active play, outdoor activities, food related activities, dance, music, outings to a play centre, parenting session based on importance of active play, culture specific activities.
- Emotional Health focus – sand play, dress up party, music, story time or parenting session on emotional health, culture specific activities, food related activities.
- Environmental/ Nature based activities –outings or within your own outdoor space, culture specific activities, nature crafts.
- Mental health focus – yoga, mindfulness, music, craft, meditation, parent session relating to mental health, nourishment, culture specific activities.
- Nutritional based activities – cooking classes, veggie garden activity, healthy eating/food games, healthy food from different cultures celebration.
- Safety Based activities – Activities that increase a child’s understanding in relation to safety issues, i.e. water safety, road safety
Eligibility Criteria
- Not-for-profits – incorporated bodies, co-operatives or associations (e.g., toy libraries, playgroups, community groups, neighbourhood houses)
- Registered charitable organisations
- Unincorporated bodies with an auspice
- Schools and learning institutions – only for activities that are not curriculum based and the primary benefit is for the wider community
- Early Years Services
Ineligible
- City of Greater Geelong operated Early Years Services
- For-profits – commercial entities, businesses
- Individual/Sole Traders (entity type with Australian Business Register)
- Individuals (without an ABN)
- Applicants with outstanding acquittals for grant funding from the City – including auspices
- Applicants with outstanding debts or arrears to the City of Greater Geelong or in legal proceedings with the City
- An organisation involved in legal proceedings relating to winding up its operations, or experiencing insolvency or bankruptcy (this includes any legal bankruptcy‑related actions against the organisation’s directors or officers)
