Deadline: 14-Jul-25
The Australian High Commission’s Direct Aid Small Grants opportunity is now open to support community-driven development initiatives that foster sustainable growth and reduce poverty. The program is managed locally through the High Commission in Port Moresby and offers financial backing for impactful, grassroots-level projects. Its mission aligns with broader efforts to promote long-term development, economic empowerment, and social inclusion.
The grant size can vary, with no minimum funding amount required. However, the maximum support available per project is AUD 100,000. Funded activities must be completed within a maximum of two years, allowing enough time for meaningful outcomes to take root.
This funding aims to support practical and immediate results. Proposals that strengthen livelihoods, empower women and indigenous communities, promote disability inclusion, and advance environmental protection and climate action are strongly encouraged. The program gives preference to projects that are sustainable, inclusive, community-driven, and supported by reliable local referees or co-funders.
Applicants should demonstrate active involvement of local communities in the implementation of the initiative. Collaborative approaches that bring in additional support from other donors or stakeholders are also positively considered.
On the other hand, certain types of expenses and activities are not eligible. These include large infrastructure projects, cash grants or loans, commercial ventures, and major capital asset purchases like vehicles or boats. The program also excludes funding for international or domestic travel, sports sponsorships without development outcomes, staff salaries, recurring operational costs, and individual financial aid such as school fees or personal scholarships.
This grant is open to not-for-profit individuals, NGOs, community-based groups, and similar entities operating in countries eligible for official development assistance. It provides a vital avenue for changemakers who want to drive small but powerful development outcomes in their communities.
