Deadline: 6 March 2018
Knight Foundation is seeking applications for “Knight Prototype Fund: Arts and Technology” to help people quickly develop and test early-stage ideas.
The foundation recognizes that no single solution fits all contexts and communities. Their goal is to accelerate technology development in the arts, learn from experiments and share lessons with the field.
Applicants don’t necessarily have to work for an organization. The foundation is looking for ideas from arts organizations, artists, technologists, designers, educators, researchers and others inside or outside of institutions who are eager to experiment. They’re open to diverse approaches and perspectives on the use of technology to connect people to the arts, and seek to identify projects that have the potential to be replicated by others in the field.
Funding Information
Knight Foundation expects to award a share of up to $1 million with an average grant size of $50,000.
Eligible Projects
- They’re looking for projects from anyone – arts organizations, technologists, designers, researchers and others who are eager to develop ideas to help cultural organizations connect people to the arts.
- At its core, applicant’s project should have a clear, testable hypothesis.
- Projects should be thoughtful about the use of technology and the intended audience.
- Projects should have replicability in mind, either through technology or approaches that others can potentially adopt in the future.
Eligibility Criteria
U.S. based individuals or organizations (both nonprofit and for-profit) may apply.
Ineligible:
- Content-only projects: The foundation is not seeking purely content-driven applications. They recognize that there will be a content component to many applications, but that should not be the dominant element in the submission.
- International projects: It’s fine to have a distributed team, but the project should be implemented in the U.S.
- Proprietary technology: They’re philanthropic funders, so they look for ideas that can be shared broadly. Although the foundation may fund projects from for-profit organizations, they will not consider ideas that solely benefit an individual, a single company, or organization.
