The BLM Threatened and Endangered Species Program focuses on conservation and recovery of endangered, threatened and BLM sensitive species (cumulatively referred to as special status species) and their habitats to help ensure balanced and diverse uses of BLM-managed lands including the Nations need for domestic sources of energy, minerals, timber, recreation, and fish and wildlife habitat for future generations.
Program Goals
- Implementing proactive conservation and recovery actions that help achieve delisting or precluding the need to list species as endangered or threatened.
- Collecting data and other information to inform the development and implementation of proactive conservation and recovery efforts or best management practices/design features for BLM Special Status Species, assisting with delisting or precluding the need to list species as endangered or threatened.
- Evaluating and updating available information to help streamline permitting processes including ESA 7a2 consultations, thereby improving efficiencies and expediency in authorization approvals on BLM lands.
- Increasing public awareness and understanding of BLM Special Status species and their habitats on public and private lands.
