The New Brunswick Arts Board (artsnb) is inviting applications for the Documentation Grant Program to provide assistance to New Brunswick arts professionals and professional artists for the research, development, and execution of original documentation and contextualization (written, film, video, multimedia) of arts activities, arts products or art history.
Documentation grants are intended to foster theoretical and critical discourse in the arts. Preference will be given to proposals concerning New Brunswick art or artists.

- Maximum Grant Amount: $8,500
Eligible Disciplines
- Eligible artistic disciplines include architecture, craft, dance, literary arts (including spoken word, storytelling, literary performance and literary translation), media arts, multidisciplinary arts, classical and non-classical music, theatre and visual arts.
- Eligible genres for all artistic disciplines include those whose intent and/or content places creativity, selfexpression and/or experimentation above the current demands and format expectations of the mainstream industry, and has a significance beyond being solely a form of entertainment.
Eligible Projects
- Eligible projects include the research, development, and execution of original documentation and contextualization of arts activities, arts products or art history. Projects must be scheduled to begin after the submission date of the application.
- Projects must not be produced for the purposes of academic credit or as part of the applicant’s work as an employee of a private or public organisation or institution. Regarding collaborative projects:
- An individual may apply for funding for a collaborative project involving other participants. All collaborators must meet program eligibility criteria.
- Submitting multiple applications for the same project from separate applicants is not permitted; only one application per project will be considered by the jury.
- If a grant is awarded, funds will be issued to the primary applicant only
Eligibility Criteria
- Eligible applicants are those who:
- Meet the definition of a professional critic or curator OR meet the professional artist criteria
- Are Canadian citizens or permanent residents;
- Have resided in New Brunswick for at least one year (12 months) prior to the application deadline;
- Have completed any projects previously funded under the Documentation program; and
- Do not have an overdue Final Report for any project funded by artsnb.
- To meet the definition of a professional critic or curator, the applicant must have:
- Produced an independent body of work after specialized training;
- Written at least three critical texts or reviews that have been published in a professional context;
- Made at least one public presentation of their work in a professional context over a three-year period (curators only)
- An applicant may receive only one Documentation grant per fiscal year (April 1 – March 31).
