The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is currently seeking applications for its program entitled “Nutrition and Alcohol-Related Health Outcomes (R03)” to examine associations between nutrition and alcohol-related health outcomes in humans and animal models.
The goal is to stimulate a broad range of research on the role of nutrition in the development, prevention, and treatment of a variety of alcohol-related health outcomes including alcohol use disorder and chronic disease.
Areas of Research Interest
- Fetal Alcohol: Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) describes a spectrum of prenatal alcohol effects that arise from maternal alcohol consumption during pregnancy.
- Chronic Disease: Numerous observational studies have associated moderate drinking with decreased risk for ischemic heart disease.
- Cognition: Alcohol potentially may interact with certain nutrients to modify the risk of Alzheimer disease and many forms of dementia.
Funding Information
Application budgets are limited to $50,000 in direct costs per year.

- Other Eligible Applicants include the following:
- Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions; Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions (AANAPISISs); Eligible Agencies of the Federal Government; Faith-based or Community-based Organizations; Hispanic-serving Institutions; Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs); Indian/Native American Tribal Governments (Other than Federally Recognized); Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organizations); Regional Organizations; Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities (TCCUs) ; U.S. Territory or Possession.
