Here to inspire creativity and support positive risk-taking, Geelong Arts Centre’s Creative Engine is proud to announce a new grant round for artists and creatives working in the G21 region.
Totalling $12,000 in financial grants and $30,000 of value-in-kind studio access at the arts centre’s landmark Ryrie Street building, the six available grant packages will directly benefit individuals and organisations who are looking to develop new and exciting work, push the boundaries, and advance their contemporary arts practice.
Types of Grants
- Ignition Grants
- Ignition grants are designed for projects that are in the early stages of creation and need support in transitioning from creative development to preparation for presentation. They are looking for projects that demonstrate clear ambition, connection to audience and an understanding of the resources needed to be successful.
- A successful Ignition offer will include:
- Cash contribution: up to $5,000
- Access to rehearsal studio spaces (maximum of 76 hours)
- Access to co-working and meeting spaces
- Mentoring opportunities with leading independent practitioners
- Opportunity for an informal progress showing, however this is not a requirement
- Expectations of grant recipients:
- Attend professional development sessions provided by Geelong Arts Centre
- Attend gatherings to meet fellow grant recipients and to connect with the Creative Engine community of creatives
- Complete an informal acquittal at the conclusion of your development period
- Jump Start Grants
- Do you have a burning idea that you are keen to explore? They’re offering once off Jump Start cash grants and access to performance and co-working spaces for innovative concepts to play and explore their ideas further.
- A successful Jump Start offer will include:
- Cash contribution: up to $1,000
- Access to rehearsal studio spaces (maximum of 38 hours)
- Access to co-working and meeting spaces
- Opportunity for an informal progress showing, however this is not a requirement
- Expectations of grant recipients:
- Attend professional development sessions provided by Geelong Arts Centre
- Attend gatherings to meet fellow grant recipients and to connect with the Creative Engine community of creatives
- Complete an informal acquittal at the conclusion of your development period
- This program creates a safe environment for artists to work on new ideas with the space and time to explore. Successful applicants will be encouraged to share activity on social media, and to work with Geelong Arts Centre’s marketing team to generate proactive publicity opportunities.
- Successful applicants will be asked to attend a private sharing / discussion of their development with Geelong Arts Centre’s programming team.
- Place to Make Initiative
- Whether you need space for workshops, concept development or networking, the Place to Make initiative is designed to offer a testing ground for creatives and companies to sample and refine ideas.
- A successful Place to Make offer will include:
- Access to rehearsal studio spaces (maximum of 38 hours)
- Access to co-working and meeting spaces
- Expectations of grant recipients:
- Attend professional development sessions provided by Geelong Arts Centre
- Attend gatherings to meet fellow grant recipients and to connect with the Creative Engine community of creatives
- Complete an informal acquittal at the conclusion of your development period
Duration
Period in which development is to be completed:
- Projects awarded a grant in this round must complete their development prior to 15 December 2023.
Eligibility Criteria
- To be successful, applications must demonstrate the ability to meet the program’s three selection criteria: Connection, Innovation & Thoughtfulness.
- Cross-genre projects are highly encouraged.
- They support the diversity of lived experiences in the d/Deaf and Disabled community and encourage multiple-marginalised Disabled people to apply.
- Priority will be given to artists who work in, live in, or can demonstrate a strong connection to the G21 region.
- They have an express commitment to First Nations artists, PoC artists, and artists from lower income backgrounds.
- Applications will be reviewed by a curatorial panel who will take into consideration the calibre of the artists, the quality of the creative idea and the connection to Geelong.
Selection Criteria
- Connection: What are your/the project’s connections to Geelong? Why is this project relevant currently for Geelong audiences and communities? How does this project support your current practice and how may the project contribute to your professional career development?
- Innovation: In your approach, be that through art form, story or concept – what innovation is being explored? What specific creative outcomes are you hoping to achieve from this exploration?
- Thoughtfulness: What considerations have you made for the project? How will you achieve your creative output/s? What do you need for this project to be a success? How will you support your own wellbeing and that of your collaborators?
