Big Lottery Fund is seeking applications for its Empowering Young People programme with an aim to fund projects to help young people help themselves to develop skills and the capability to face challenges in their lives.
The aim of Empowering Young People is to give young people the ability to cope with challenges in their lives. The programme will fund projects that give young people in Northern Ireland aged 8-25 the ability to cope with challenges in their lives.
This programme is all about putting young people in the lead. The programme is looking for strong projects that involve young people in the planning and delivery, as well as their support networks and the communities which will help them to develop skills to cope with challenges in their lives.
Focus Areas
- Young careers: anyone who cares, unpaid, for a friend or family member who due to illness, disability, a mental health problem or an addiction cannot cope without their support.
- Young people with learning disabilities: a learning disability affects way a person understands information and how they communicate. This means they can have difficulty:
- understanding new or complex information
- learning new skills
- coping independently
- Young people facing barriers to learning and employment: anyone that is at risk of not being in employment, education or training.

- Funding size: £100,000 – £600,000
- Total available: £50 million
Expected Outcomes
- More young people are ready for education, work and training
- Young people have better relationships with their support networks and communities.
- Young people have improved health and well being.
Eligibility Criteria
- Voluntary or community sector organisations can apply to Empowering Young People.
- The programme will also accept applications from a partnership of voluntary, statutory or private sector organisations as long as the partnership is led by a voluntary sector organisation.
How to Apply
This is a two-stage application process
- Stage One: Applicant can submit applications and the decision will be given within 30 working days and we will tell you if you have been invited to make a stage two application.
- Stage Two: Applicant will have up to four months to complete and send the stage two applications. Decisions will usually take four months from the date of receiving a completed stage 2 forms.
