The U.S. Embassy Bucharest Public Diplomacy Section is pleased to announce that funding is available through its Public Diplomacy Small Grants Program for projects that advance U.S. foreign policy goals, strengthen ties between the United States and Romania, thereby making America safer, stronger and more prosperous.
These may be accomplished through educational, cultural, and other programming that highlights shared values and promotes bilateral cooperation and mutual prosperity. All projects must include an American cultural element, or connection with American expert/s, organization/s, or institution/s in a specific field that will promote increased understanding of U.S. policy and perspectives.
Areas of Focus
- Further U.S. and international peace and security:
- media literacy
- counter malign foreign influence
- cybersecurity education
- Promote democracy and rule of law:
- rule of law
- democracy
- civic education and participation
- free and independent press
- youth leadership
- Strengthen economic prosperity:
- economic education
- energy security
- STEM
Funding Information
- Total available funding: $200,000
- Award amounts: Awards may range from a minimum of $8,000 to a maximum of $20,000
- Duration: 6 to 12 months
Eligible Projects
- Academic and professional lectures, seminars, and speaker programs
- Artistic and cultural workshops, joint performances, and exhibitions
- Cultural heritage conservation and preservation programs
- Professional and academic exchanges and programs
- NGO projects promoting U.S. values
- Projects that advance U.S. foreign policy goals
Ineligible Projects
- Programs relating to partisan political activity;
- Charitable or development activities;
- Construction;
- Programs that support specific religious activities;
- Fund-raising campaigns.
Participants and Audiences
- Target audiences for this funding opportunity are youth, young professionals with leadership potential, established professionals engaged in fields relevant to the U.S. – Romania partnership, journalists and media professionals, community leaders, cultural professionals, and educators. Competitive proposals will include programing outside of Bucharest.
Eligibility Criteria
- The Public Diplomacy Section encourages applications from Romania and the United States:
- Registered not-for-profit organizations, including think tanks and civil society/non-governmental organizations with programming experience
- Non-profit or governmental educational and cultural institutions
- Applicants may submit multiple proposals, however, grants will be prioritized to a variety of applicants.
Ineligibility Criteria
- For-profit, commercial entities, and governmental entities are not eligible to apply.

- The proposal clearly addresses the goals and objectives of this funding opportunity
- All documents are in English
- All budgets are in U.S. dollars
- All pages are numbered
- All documents are formatted to A4 paper
- All Microsoft Word documents are single-spaced, 12-point Calibri font, with a minimum of 1-inch margins.
