The Environmental Justice Fund (EJF) is inviting applications from the CBOs working on all kinds of environmental justice issues.
Themes
- Themes under which a proposal could fall include:
- Water quality, water pollution and environmental health issues caused by poor water quality;
- Impact on local communities of the water dimensions of big mega-projects or other developments;
- Water infrastructure that is owned and maintained by, and that benefits, local communities;
- Community protection and custodianship of local water sources like springs, dams, rivers and wetlands;
- Equitable access to water in urban areas(such as anti-privatisation, leak fixing, anti-arrears campaigns)
- Governance of water resources in ways that prioritise community participation (such as communitycentred catchment management forums);
- Protection of oceans from extractive activities (e.g. deep-sea mining, oil drilling), pollution (e.g. plastic waste, industrial runoff, oil spills), enclosures (e.g. restricted access to fishing communities) and privatisation (e.g. corporate control over marine resources, commodification of ocean ecosystems);
- Ways in which water issues intersect with race, gender and disability.
Funding Information
- They give 1-year grants of R50 000 – R100 000. They also provide accompaniment alongside financial support in the form of capacity-strengthening and networking support.
Eligible Activities
- The activities which EJF might support include:
- A specific event (like a protest, meeting, peer learning or workshop);
- Organising, campaigns and advocacy work;
- Community-led research;
- Litigation by community-based organisations;
- Community environmental education initiatives; and
- Organisational strengthening initiatives.
Who can apply?
- To be eligible you must be:
- An organisation or network based in, and part of, the community you serve;
- Working on environmental justice; and
- In South Africa
- Please note that EJF does not consider applications from established NGOs.
