Deadline: 26-Jul-2024
The Embassy of France to Australia has announced a call for proposals On the Road to the United Nations Ocean Conference: Pacific Knowledge and Knowledge of the Pacific.
The Third United Nations Ocean Conference will take place in Nice in June 2025 and is chaired jointly by the governments of France and Costa Rica. Building on the outcomes of the previous editions, the governments of France and Costa Rica have assessed that:
- The third conference must offer transformative action through a transformative experience in Nice. It should provide the solutions the ocean needs, to truly address and resolve key challenges they are facing.
- Ocean science and the funding of SDG14 will be the two legs on which the two governments propose the UNOC to stand and walk towards a “Summit of Ocean Action”.
- For this to happen, the participation of civil society organizations, including advocacy NGOs, and of the scientific community is key.
Program Details
- The Ocean plays a key role in sustainable development, in the fight against climate change and against the loss of biodiversity. The protection of marine ecosystems is essential to a sustainable world and it requires intensive and cooperative research at the local, regional and global levels. The outcomes of such research are directly relevant to the activities of civil society organisations, businesses, and government agencies.
- The Pacific is home to the most extensive and diverse coral reefs in the world, the largest tuna fishery, the deepest oceanic trenches, and the healthiest, and in some cases largest, remaining populations of many globally endangered species such as whales, sea turtles, sharks and stingrays. SDG 14 aims to monitor regional efforts in integrated and sustainable ocean management and conservation, adaptation, mitigation and biodiversity activities.
- To meet these objectives and in preparation of the UNOC-3, the Embassy of France to Australia is offering a grant to members of civil society’s organisation and/or to scientists to support preparatory consultation work for the UNOC, with the aim of delivering recommendations for the summit.
- Projects can take the form of workshops and conferences, community awareness and public forums, field trips, reports and policy papers. Projects involving organisations from New Caledonia, Wallis-and-Futuna and French Polynesia are strongly encouraged to apply.
Funding Information
- A total of AUD 48,000 (forty-eight thousand Australian dollars) is made available for this call. Submitted projects must be completed before 1st April 2025.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applications are open to members of civil society organisations and researchers of any nationality and seniority level working for an Australia-based organisation.
