UN Women is pleased to launch a call for proposals for Promoting Women’s Participation in Public and Political life through Media.
UN Women ECO aims to support partnership with a CSO that has a track record of working in the area of gender equality, media and communications, women in leadership and governance and community mobilisation. CSO’s are invited to submit proposals to design and implement interventions to transform gender norms so that women are accepted as legitimate and effective leaders particularly through strengthened capacity of media professionals (mainstream and community media (editors, journalists, and advertisement professionals)), and implement campaigns that sensitize media and community on the right of women to participate in public and political life.
Funding Information
- The budget range for this proposal should be equivalent to 150,000 – 180,000 USD
- UN Women is seeking partners to implement the project within 18 months.
Key Activities
- Identify media professionals including editors, journalists, reporters, anchors, creative directors, graphic designers, marketing directors working in different media channels across newspapers, magazines, blogs, billboards, radio stations, television stations, and in marketing and advertising in both traditional and new media, from both national and local outlets, as well as public and private outlets at federal and regional level as target groups under the project;
- Establish 12 cohorts for capacity development from the identified media professionals including,
- junior media professionals; and
- editors in chief/senior media professionals;
- marketing and advertising professionals.
- Criteria to be determined in collaboration with UN Women;
- Based on the capacity development plan and using UN Women’s and Ethiopia Media Authority Training Manual on Gender Sensitive Reporting for Media and Gender Sensitive Advertisement Guideline, undertake training sessions with the 10 cohorts, with at least 300 media professionals (50% women and 50% men );
- Undertake media campaign, at least 20 stories, to promote women’s representation in leadership and decision-making position taking into account also the representation of young women, rural women and women with disability using mainstream and community media;
- Organizes networking spaces for media professionals, gender and media workshops with women leaders including providing a platform for champions to share their experience and best practices;
- Agree regular knowledge exchange meetings for cohort members;
- Support media professionals to broadcast and publish at least 10 gender responsive stories about women in alignment with the training’s content especially at the government level.
Expected Outcomes
- Unequal power relations, gender norms and discriminatory behaviors and practices are transformed to promote the participation of women in leadership and decision-making processes
- Increased awareness of community members (including women, young women and men, and women with disability), CBOs and government entities on persistence of multiple forms of discrimination and inequality and their effects on women’s participation in public and political life
- Enhanced awareness and capacities of the media to recognize and effectively portray women as leaders and decision makers.
Eligibility Criteria
- UN Women invite qualified parties to submit Technical and Financial Proposals to provide services associated with the UN Women requirements for a Responsible Party.
- UN Women is soliciting proposals from Civil Society Organizations (CSOs). Women’s organizations or entities are highly encouraged to apply.
- Technical/functional competencies required
- In the selection of partners, the following competencies will be considered:
- Relevance of the mandate and the role of the organization to implement expected results and to contribute to the sustainability of said results.
- Soundness of technical competency as described in the Terms of Reference as a response for the Call for Proposals.
- Experience to implement interventions that aim at transforming gender norms so that women are accepted as legitimate and effective leaders through increased capacity of media professionals to promote the role of women in leadership and political participation and developing campaigns that sensitize the media and community on the right of women to participate in public and political life;
- Experience in engaging with media to advance women’s rights and gender equality as a social goal including on leadership and political participation;
- Experience and proven track record/credibility and capacity on gender and development, RBM and its application to key processes (eg, planning, programming, monitoring, reporting and evaluation), and other areas of expertise relevant to the services required;
- Capacity to deliver expected results: governance and management competency, and financial and administrative competency.
- Relevant experience in partnerships with UN Women, other UN agencies, governments, NGOs, and other development actors.
- Other competencies that can be an asset for the performance of services
- Adoption of a rights-based approach in all its work.
- Establishment of strategic partnerships with key actors from Government, civil society and community organizations and groups.
- Inclusiv e and m ulti-sectoral approach to transform gender norms in media and community level.
