Deadline: 30-Jun-25
A new call for proposals has been launched to support organizations in Italy that are actively working to uphold democratic values, protect civic space, and promote public participation. This initiative offers project-based funding aimed at strengthening civil society organizations and supporting their ability to withstand increasing pressures.
The funding is designed to help organizations defend civic freedoms and resist restrictions that threaten public engagement and activism. It also seeks to help expand the civic space, allowing a broader and more diverse group of voices to participate in public life. Applicants are encouraged to propose creative and impactful activities aligned with these goals.
Organizations may pursue a range of actions, such as monitoring and analyzing threats to civic space, including legal restrictions, harassment, or other forms of intimidation. Other eligible activities include public advocacy, awareness-raising campaigns, and initiatives that aim to shift narratives in support of civic values.
Applicants can also propose projects that broaden participation, connect with underrepresented communities, and test new models for organizing and building engaged constituencies. This flexibility allows groups to respond to their unique local or national challenges while working toward shared democratic goals.
The program provides a one-year project grant of up to EUR 30,000, with the possibility of a no-cost extension. Funds must be used to support direct project activities in alignment with the applicant’s goals.
Eligible applicants are nonprofit civil society organizations legally registered in Italy with a strong record of promoting civic participation and democratic values. Organizations should demonstrate strong ties to civil society networks, effective methods for citizen engagement, and notable impact in their work, whether at the local, regional, or national level.
Applications from coalitions and groups that work in alliance with broader civil society movements are welcome, especially those committed to engaging marginalized or underrepresented communities.
However, political party-affiliated organizations are not eligible to apply.
Proposals will be evaluated based on several criteria. Reviewers will assess the organization’s long-term commitment to protecting civic space, its understanding of the Italian civic landscape, and the relevance of its proposed work. Capacity for project implementation, the clarity of the methodology, and measurable results will also be taken into consideration.
Other factors include the ability to form effective partnerships, the inclusion of diverse and marginalized voices, and the relevance and accuracy of the project budget. Strong proposals will show a deep awareness of current challenges to civic life in Italy and propose practical, inclusive ways to address them.
