The Government of Canada is launching a Call for Proposals to prevent gender-based violence through youth dating violence prevention.
Gender-based violence in the form of youth dating violence is a serious public health issue with long-lasting health and social impacts. The stages between adolescence and early adulthood are crucial times to provide youth with the knowledge and skills to develop and maintain healthy relationships throughout their lives.
Objectives
- This call for proposals has 3 streams of projects, each with its own objective:
- Scale up stream
- This stream scales up, delivers and further tests youth dating violence prevention interventions that have already shown to be effective through rigorous evaluation.
- Key populations stream
- This stream delivers and tests existing youth dating violence prevention interventions that support underserved or at-risk populations.
- Indigenous stream
- This stream supports Indigenous organizations to develop or adapt, deliver and test culturally appropriate youth dating violence prevention interventions for Indigenous youth.
- Scale up stream

- Projects must include these key action areas:
- Scale up a health promotion intervention that has shown effectiveness at:
- fostering healthy relationships
- preventing youth dating violence
- Incorporate an intervention research approach to evaluate the scale-up
- Engage youth and embed their voice in all aspects of the project
- Include aspects of the project that will be sustained and continue over time
- Have existing and build new multi-level and multi-sectoral collaborations
- Support the wellbeing of youth involved in the project by using approaches that are:
- culturally safe
- trauma and violence-informed
- Build the evidence base and support knowledge mobilization about youth dating violence prevention.
- Scale up a health promotion intervention that has shown effectiveness at:
- Projects must include these key action areas:
- Key populations stream
- Projects must adapt, where needed, and deliver an existing health promotion intervention to prevent youth dating violence and foster healthy relationships amongst 1 or more of these populations:
- 2SLGBTQI+ youth
- Youth with a disability
- Black or racialized youth
- Youth who live in remote or northern areas
- Youth who have already experienced gender-based violence or family violence
- Youth who are part of immigrant, refugee and newcomer communities.
- Projects must adapt, where needed, and deliver an existing health promotion intervention to prevent youth dating violence and foster healthy relationships amongst 1 or more of these populations:
- Indigenous stream
- Projects must include the following key action areas:
- develop or adapt a culturally appropriate health promotion intervention to:
- prevent youth dating violence
- foster healthy relationships amongst Indigenous youth
- share knowledge of youth dating violence prevention
- include plans for multi-level and multi-sectoral collaborations
- engage youth and embed their voice in all aspects of the project
- use trauma and violence-informed and culturally safe approaches
- incorporate an intervention research approach, which may include culturally relevant frameworks rooted in Indigenous knowledge systems.
- develop or adapt a culturally appropriate health promotion intervention to:
- Projects must include the following key action areas:
Funding Information and Duration
- Scale up stream
- You can apply for up to the maximum amount that lasts for the entire duration of the project. These amounts are:
- Up to $1,250,000 in total for a project within a local, provincial, or territorial context
- Up to $2,500,000 in total for a project in multiple provinces or territories
- Projects can last for a minimum of 3 years and a maximum of 5 years.
- You can apply for up to the maximum amount that lasts for the entire duration of the project. These amounts are:
- Key populations stream
- You can apply for up to the maximum amount that lasts for the entire duration of the project. These amounts are:
- Up to $1,000,000 in total for a project within a local, provincial, or territorial context
- Up to $1,750,000 in total for a project in multiple provinces or territories
- Projects can last for a minimum of 3 years and a maximum of 5 years.
- You can apply for up to the maximum amount that lasts for the entire duration of the project. These amounts are:
- Indigenous stream
- You can apply for up to $1,000,000. This is the total maximum amount for the entire duration of the project.
- Projects can last for a minimum of 3 years and a maximum of 5 years.

- These Canadian organizations are eligible to apply:
- Not-for-profit organizations
- Research organizations or academic institutions
- Applicants and collaborators must have the necessary experience and knowledge to deliver the project. Together, you must have experience:
- in intervention research involving youth and
- working with youth on youth dating violence issues
- These Canadian organizations are eligible to apply:
- Key populations stream
- These Canadian organizations are eligible to apply:
- Not-for-profit organizations
- Research organizations or academic institutions
- Applicants and collaborators must have the necessary experience and knowledge to deliver the project. Together, you must have experience:
- in intervention research involving youth
- working with youth on youth dating violence issues and
- working with 1 or more of the underserved or at-risk populations identified for the purpose of this call for proposals
- These Canadian organizations are eligible to apply:
- Indigenous stream
- Eligible applicants include:
- Indigenous governments
- Indigenous not-for-profit organizations, such as Indigenous youth and Two-Spirit organizations
- For the purpose of this call for proposals, an Indigenous organization is one whose core purpose is to serve Indigenous communities and peoples. To show this, you must demonstrate how Indigenous communities and peoples are at the centre of your organization’s mandate and activities.
- Applicants and their collaborators must have the necessary experience and knowledge to deliver the project. Together, you must have experience:
- in intervention research and
- working with Indigenous youth.
