The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an agency of Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is seeking applications from eligible entities for a program entitled “Conducting Public Health Activities in Egypt”.
The purpose of the program is to conduct public health research and surveillance on emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases of public health importance including, but not limited to, acute respiratory illness, acute febrile illness, acute infectious neurologic disease, acute diarrheal illness, tuberculosis, acute hepatitis, hospital-associated infections, and anti-microbial resistance in the Arab republic of Egypt.
Objectives
- Assess the burden of new and emerging infectious diseases, including zoonotic diseases under the Health approach, and chronic disease as well as the response capacity to theses threats in Egypt.
- Assess the prevalence of diseases like respiratory diseases (e.g., pneumonia, influenza, respiratory syncytial virus [RSV], tuberculosis), zoonotic/vector-borne diseases meningitis/encephalitis, diarrheal/enteric diseases, viral hepatitis and hospital-associated infections and other through large surveys, studies in sentinel hospitals or in the community setting.
- Assess the capacity to respond to emerging infections of global concern; Conduct operational research on barriers to adequate responses or public health interventions for emerging infections or chronic diseases.
- Maintain, utilize, and expand the existing state of art laboratory capabilities in Beheira Governorate to support surveillance activities and response to public health needsfor other Governorates, such as Beheira, Menia, Asuite, and Aswan, in the conduct of serology, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and other molecular testing techniques, bacterial culture and subtyping, and solid and liquid-based culture testing for mycobacterium tuberculosis.
- Assure Egypt’s National Electronic Disease Surveillance System (NEDSS) is in compliance with International Health Regulations (IHR) requirements by strengthening laboratory and surveillance reporting capacity;
- Expand a stepwise plan for implementation of infection control requirements necessary for IHR response in MoHP facilities.
Funding Information
- The estimated total funding for 5 yrs.: $10,000,000.
- Funding for first year $2,000,000 – with individual awards ranging from $0 to $2,000,000 for the first year.
