The Tanzania Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH) is seeking concept notes for its Competitive Research Grant program that aims to contribute to the Government agenda towards industrialization initiatives through the enhancement of productivity in critical productive sectors of the economy and developing technologies that would support local industries and hence, increasing employment opportunities leading to improvement of people’s livelihoods as stipulated in the Tanzania Second Five Year Development Plan and Tanzania Development Vision 2025.
The Call encourages research ideas and technologies on potential up-scaling and commercialization of products which catalyze industrialization processes.
The main theme of the program is “Tanzania towards Industrial Economy”.
Sub-Themes
The following sub-themes will be considered for this particular Call:
- Human Capital Asset and Quality Livelihood
- Strong and Competitive Economy
- National Tourism and Cultural Heritage
- Natural Resources Management, Environmental Conservation and Climate Change
- Cross Cutting Issues
- Emerging Sciences & Technologies
Grant Information
The maximum funding will not exceed TZs 120,000,000 (one hundred and twenty million Tanzanian shillings) for a duration of two years. Expenses for traveling and perdiems should not exceed 20% of the whole budget.
Eligibility Criteria
- All applications should have a clear focus on industrial establishment, development and initiatives as reflected in the Second Five Year Development Plan
- The Applicant (s) should be Tanzanian (Tanzania mainland and Zanzibar) researchers engaged in local public and private higher learning, R&D institutions and/or industry.
- The Principal Investigator (PI) should hold a doctorate degree. He/she should demonstrate competence in the applied area of research with at least one publication as the principal author appearing in an indexed journal.
Evaluation Criteria
By COSTECH to be compliant with the requirements set out in this Call will be evaluated in accordance with the following criteria:
- Scientific and technical merit;
- Focus to industrialization policy of the Country
- Novelty and originality
- Quality and clarity of project presentation;
- Clear Methodology
- Relevance and feasibility
- Multidisciplinary and gender aspect inclusion
- Capacity building on supporting research components for Masters and/or PhD students enrolled in local Universities and/or R&D Institutions).
- Potential for commercialization and up-scaling
