This EU funding initiative has been launched to promote and protect civic space, human rights, and democratic engagement in Eswatini. This call for proposals is designed to support civil society organizations, media actors, and human rights advocates working to safeguard fundamental freedoms and empower local communities.
At its core, the initiative aims to strengthen civic participation and uphold human rights globally, with a special focus on fostering active citizenship in Eswatini. It seeks to create stronger human rights networks, promote legal awareness, and empower communities—especially in rural areas—to understand and exercise their rights.
This opportunity also emphasizes enhancing the capacity of journalists and media professionals to respond to emerging challenges, particularly those associated with digital technologies. Support will be extended to help ensure the media remains a vital pillar of democratic society, even as it navigates complex technological and legal landscapes.
The total amount available for this program in Eswatini is EUR 500,000, with grants ranging between EUR 490,000 and EUR 500,000. Projects should be designed to run for a duration of no less than 42 months and no longer than 48 months.
Eligible applicants must be non-profit legal entities, such as NGOs, with at least three years of experience in managing projects—particularly in the field of human rights. While applicants can be based in any country, those not located in Eswatini must partner with at least one co-applicant from within Eswatini. Applicants are expected to directly manage the proposed actions rather than act as intermediaries.
This initiative offers a significant opportunity for civil society actors to expand their impact, build inclusive networks, and enhance civic awareness across Eswatini.
