The Foundation for Human Rights is currently seeking proposals for its “Socio Economic Justice for All” programme in order to facilitate the realisation of socioeconomic rights for vulnerable and marginalized groups, the strengthening of civil society organisations and to build sector coordination in the social justice sector.
One of the main objectives of the SEJA programme is to contribute towards the promotion, protection and realisation of socio economic rights. This call will support programmes aimed at creating awareness of socio economic rights. While recognizing that all human rights are universal, indivisible and interdependent, socio-economic rights are particularly important in the South African context of widespread poverty and inequality.
Programme Priorities
Priority within this programme will be given to projects that address the concerns of the most vulnerable groups in society as is defined by the South African Human Rights Commission. This category of persons includes:
- Women in vulnerable situations exposed to violence and abuse including domestic violence
- Children in vulnerable situations exposed to violence and abuse including domestic violence as well as child-headed households
- Rural and Urban poor communities
- Farm Workers and Farm Dwellers
- People affected by HIV/AIDS
- Lesbian, Gay Bisexual, Transgender and Intersexed (LGBTI) Communities
- People affected by
- SEJA/KRA1.5/S01 Foundation for Human Rights
- Violations of their socio-economic rights
- Race and xenophobia
- Lack of land rights
- Their advanced age
- Persons with disabilities
- Youth, including youth in prisons
Objectives
This call will fund projects that support the realization of socio-economic rights by funding projects that:
- Promote awareness and positive action to facilitate access to socio economic rights in peri urban and rural communities
- Support education and training initiatives to promote socio economic rights for CSO’s work
- Promote the rights of farmworkers and promote security of tenure for farmworkers,
- Support initiatives that create awareness and promote access to socio economic rights such as housing, health and education for women and the girl child
- Support initiatives that create awareness and promote access to socio economic rights for young people
- Support initiatives that create awareness and promote access to socio economic rights for disabled persons
- Support for awareness-raising campaigns and initiatives in the area of socio economic rights right between Local communities, government and businesses that enhance the realization of socio economic rights
- Promotion of communication and mediation between communities and the civil service to achieve the realization of human rights.
Activities
Activities that will be supported under this call include but is not restricted to:
- Materials development
- Training programmes for communities and CSOs’ workshops seminars.
- Community dialogues
- Advocacy, mediation and lobbying initiatives.
Funding Information
- Proposals for a one year project is limited to an amount of R120 000,00
- Proposals for a multi-year project must not exceed R240,000.00
Eligibility Criteria
This Call is a national one and is open to all organisations in any one of the nine provinces of South Africa. The Call is aimed at eligible Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) based in, or working closely with communities in rural and peri-urban areas and working with marginalized groups as indicated.
To be considered eligible, applicant organizations should meet the following criteria:
- Be registered, or in the process of registering as a Not for Profit
- Organization (NPO) that is a, community-based organization (CBO), Section 21 company (Not for Profit Company), or a non-profit trust.
- Have a proven track record of implementing education and awareness programs on constitutional rights and promoting access to socio-economic rights.
- Demonstrate that the proposed project will involve active community participation and benefit.
