The Goethe-Institut in Johannesburg has announced a call for proposals for the 2021 edition of the Goethe-Institut Project Space (GPS), a multi-disciplinary roving project space support programme for South Africa.
The programme supports work realised in any part of South Africa; ranging from workshops to exhibitions, events and performances; in any discipline including visual art, performing arts, film, music or combinations of afore mentioned forms.
GPS is envisioned as a non-commercial, artist-centered free platform, designed to support not only the artists and their projects, but also the many structures, spaces and festivals that currently exist and need partnerships of this nature in order to continue their work. GPS enables creators in all artistic disciplines to select the space and infrastructure they wish to work with. If awarded, a GPS grant would support both the hosting space and the project itself.
GPS signals a move to decentralize; supporting smaller, less institutional and non-commercial spaces, and privileging those situated outside of the large metropoles of South Africa. Practitioners will be able to produce their work locally with a partner of their choice and a GPS grant. An independent jury of arts professionals, selected by the Goethe-Institut for their expertise in the field of independent art projects, is responsible for the selection of projects that will be supported in 2021.
Funding Information
The Goethe-Institut offers financial support for chosen projects to the maximum amount of R60 000. Should the budget exceed this amount, the artist/project team should seek further support – information of which should be included in the budget plan of the application form. No additional funding will be made available.
Criteria
- Only projects of a non-commercial nature will be considered.
- In the event that the person, who is to realise a chosen project lives outside of South Africa, the Goethe-Institut will support up to half of their economy flight ticket cost in order for them to be present to realise the project.
- The artist/project team will be responsible to work out terms of reference with the space where the project will take place, detailing the basis of the partnership. The artist is responsible for realising the work and will be held accountable.
- The profile of the space must be such that realisation of proposed project is viable.
- The signed letter of commitment from the space is essential.
- Work produced remains the property of the artist. The Goethe-Institut and GPS must however be acknowledged in all subsequent showings of the work and mentioned in all press relating to the work.
- The Goethe-Institut needs to approve all promotional material, including press releases and invitations related to the project before anything goes to print or is electronically, or otherwise, distributed.
- The Goethe-Institut will not be held liable for accidents of any kind to the artist and/or third parties.
- The artist and hosting partner are responsible in their individual capacities to make tax payments related to the project grant when required. The Goethe-Institut cannot be held responsible for any related issues.
- Only one project proposal per artist will be considered by the jury.
Evaluation Criteria
- The project application has met the deadline and documentation is complete.
- Realisation plan, budget outline and partner organisation/infrastructure are realistic for achieving the aims of the project.
- The work is appropriate for the space and audience of the space and reflects what the artist/project leader is aiming to achieve.
- The project is feasible within the time period.
- The proposed space has an established record, operating for at least 1 year and professionalism evident.
