Government of Canada has announced the New Horizons for Seniors Program which is a federal grants and contributions program that supports projects designed by and for seniors.
Objectives
- promoting volunteerism among seniors
- engaging seniors in the community through mentoring of others
- expanding awareness of elder abuse, including financial abuse
- supporting social participation and inclusion of seniors, and
- providing capital assistance for new and existing community projects and/or programs for seniors
Goals
Some of the goals of the New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP) are:
- empowering seniors
- encouraging them to share their knowledge, skills and experience with others in the community, and
- enhancing seniors’ social well-being and community vitality
Funding Information
The New Horizons for Seniors Program, community-based funding, provides 2 types of grants:
- Community-based grants up to $25,000
- Community-based up to $5,000 small grants pilot project
Streams
The Program has 2 funding streams:
- Community-based grants that are either for activity-based or capital assistance projects.
- Pan-Canadian grants and contributions to support innovative projects that create a significant impact in communities and invest in large initiatives that meet the growing social needs of seniors.
Eligibility Criteria
- not-for-profit organizations, community-based coalitions, networks and ad hoc committees
- for-profit organizations, provided that the nature and intent of the activity are non commercial, do not generate profit and fit within the program objectives
- municipal governments, band/tribal councils and other Indigenous organizations, research and educational institutions, including school boards, school districts, and
- public health and social services institutions, as well as universities, colleges and CEGEPs (these organizations are eligible with the agreement of their provincial or territorial government.)
